Looks like we may be looking right down the barrel once more. Latest forecast brings Isaac pretty close to dead center on this part of the coast. Give or take a few miles. So the prep begins or continues. Helped a neighbor turn his boat around this afternoon, and we are all getting co-ordinated with our anchoring plans. I don't gotta do much, except pull sails off, and deploy anchors. At least, according to the forecast, it's gonna be a Cat. 2, which ain't good, but is much better than a Cat.5. I'm gonna ride it out regardless. Fill the water tank, get some stove fuel, and a few groceries. I'll be good to go.

Good luck to you Phil.. I spent most of the day doing prep work. Doubled all lines and removed all canvas..Keeping fingers crossed.. Looks like less wind than Katrina but probably the same amount of water, 5-7 feet..

The track keeps coming right at New Orleans. Best news so far is it is only forecast to be a Cat. 2, which won't be too bad.

Nice & Easy, here in Pascagoula, all of our folks in the Inner Harbor have stripped sails and canvas and have tied out across the Harbor. I have 6 ropes 5/8" by 150 feet, three on each end so I,m hoping I will be OK. Looking like its gonna go in West of us at this mornings update. Y'all hunker down over there and be careful!

Going to adjust my docklines today. I waited too long last year and the dock was already under 1 foot of water by the time I got there. I'm thinking about doubling up some docklines....on the boat in the next slip that doesn't seem to have had a human visit in at least 6 months. Good luck all.

Like Forrest mentions, remember an important part of securing your boat is surveying the boats around you. There was a powerboat in a neighboring dock which had not been visited in a while and the lines were in poor condition so we took a couple of brand new lines and helped secure it. Yesterday morning the boat was gone and were told by another neighbor that it had been towed away during the night. They also took the new lines with them. In any case the chances of it being a hazard were reduced or removed.

I was trying to come up with criteria for pulling the boat, so I figured a good rule would be if I'm in the error cone 72 hours out. That's rather moot now.

So I pulled the boat yesterday. I was a nice, albeit slow, sail - DDW, wing on wing, 3-4kt wind, boat speed 2kt. It to 4 hours to go the 7.5 miles to the ramp.

There were move sailboats out than I've seen in a while - some were heading through the seabrook bridge, I assume to get pulled, others were just sailing along - getting in one last sail before the boat gets tossed?

I honestly don't see how trailer sailors do it - pulling the boat and de-rigging is a major PIA. I'll only do it when I have no other choice.

Now my only problem is the boat is sitting in the front yard, and the wife tells me : I'm glad you got the boat out, but if that thing comes through my front window you are in trouble.

We are expecting 80-90 mph sustained winds, with higher gusts. We've seen this before at my house with Katrina - when the wind blows over 100 I'm always amazed that the roof stays on.

The lesson of recent storms is that the surge can be a bigger problem than the wind:

Marina docks float off their pilings

Boat's impale themselves pounding on the top of their piling

Hauled sail boats go down like dominos when one boat get's bounced in its stands and tips into its neighbor.

Stuff comes ashore into boatyards and floats around bashing into hauled boats.

I'm glad

I am so happy that I am where I am, in this dead end canal. There are 4 other boats in here, and we are co-ordinating among ourselves. All will be anchored out enough to keep them out of the yards and off the docks. I would really hate being in a marina, and depending on a lot of others to make my own boat secure.
