Funny thing you mention compression. Now that I've got some experience with this job, and being a hack engineer, I'm not sure these bulkheads are there for that reason. The starboard bulkhead is screwed to the compression post, but looks to me that it's only there to keep the post in place. The post "floats" on the centerboard trunk and is not screwed to anything.
I think the bulkheads are there to attach the chainplates to, and a convenient way to keep the compression post in place. Not to mention plywood in general is not really designed to resist compressive loads.
Look at the interior of a Hunter 240 and you'll see what I mean. No support to the sides of the cabin, but a piece of bulkhead to keep the post in place.
