I need to replace the starboard bulkhead on a 1977 catalina 27 that I just purchased. I searched the archives and was unable to find info on the actual replacement. How do you remove the bulkhead? Does the mast need to be stepped while the shroud is loose? Any info would be appreciated.

Bulkhead replacement

Danny, I'm in the middle of the same project for the port bulkhead. I have an '82 C27 tall rig. There were some archived articles earlier that helped me. I am assuming you are referring to the wood bulkhead supporting the shroud chainplate that frequently suffers water damage. To remove the bulkhead, I had to unscrew and take out the top of the hanging locker and molding. I then unscrewed and unbolted the damaged bulkhead, including the chainplate. The bulkhead should slide out pretty easily, and you may find that the chainplate is loose from the lack of adhesion through the deck (hence the damage). Your new wood should be 12mm teak plywood. I got one sided plywood because the "bad" side will be the inside of my hanging locker. If your bulkhead is also the inside of your head, you will want two-sided teak. My one-sided teak cost me $170 for a 4' x 8' sheet here in Maine. The double sided costs about $190. Use the old bulkhead as a template, and cut out with a saber saw. Seal the edges with marine epoxy. (I haven't done this part yet, and do not have any recommendations as to type.) The teak will also have to finished (varnished) somehow to match. Hope this helps. If I run into other tips as I finish the job, I'll let you know.

Bulkhead

Dan: I, too, am in the replacement mode of my starboard bulkhead. I have already removed mine...No problem. Undo a few screws and some bolts on the bottom and the chainplate and it is out. I am using 1/2in. marine plywood and having a thin formica glued to either side. Am using white formica to brighten the interior. I will "plastic" paint the exposed ends. I will be putting mine back in this week, but considering it took me less than an hour to pull the old one out, I should have the new one replaced in about four hours (things never seem to go back in as easy as they come out. Cost should be less than $200. DAVE

Bulkhead

I replaced the port bulkhead on my C27 about a month ago. I hadn't done anything of the sort before, but it only took a couple of hours to remove, cut(using the old one as a template)and replace. It was actually quite easy and it looks fabulous. Next week I'm replacing the starboard one. I've read in the archives that for that one, it might be easier if the head is removed. Definitely seal the top edge with epoxy (had this been done originally you wouldn't be changing the bulkhead now) and do not get anything thicker as you will have problems fitting the chainplate. good luck
