Bulkhead Removal 76 ODAY 27

On Saturday I removed the port Bulkhead. Thought it was going to be much harder thanit was. From Start to laying it on the dock about 2 1/2 hoors.Things I learned along the was. Do not use a Roto Zip. It is very hard to get into the angle that you need. Almost put a hole in the hull. I then took a sharp wood chisel and it went very fast.It had shown tor at the very top and the bottom. When it was removed found most of the bulkhead that is along the hull was rotted away. Only the top bolt hole on the chainplate was bad. The whole bulkhead was just floating in place.This damage was due to leaking chain plate. The other side was fine with no leak.

leaking chainplates

I used a product called sikaflex 292 to repair leaking chainplates on my 26 oday. Be sure to clean out as much old caulk as possible and tape off the deck so that when the 292 oozes out you will be able to simplly yank the tape and have a very pro finish .You may also need to put some epoxy in for the screw holes as they are very likely compromised .

Check the Starboard Side Closer

I recently had the same problem on my '76 O'Day 25 (except my chainplate pulled through the deck, and mine were reversed, starboard side pulled through).I'd recommend you take off the starboard side chainplate, and examine closer. My port side looked fine, but I replaced the bulkhead anyway (I decided to replace the entire interior). When I got the chainplate off, the teak laminate looked fine, but I peeled some of it off, and it was like balsa wood underneath. The plywood was definitely shot.

Bulkhead

Herb, Thanks for the tip. I did pull the starboard chainplate and checked and there is no damage there.Can you tell me what you used for the bulkhead? Have looked at several type plywoods. Found a product called Hydrotek that is 9 plys and isfully resin impregnated. Not sure if I can find it on East Coast.Thanks Joe

Hydrotek

Hydrotek was what I used. The outer layers are luan, and knot free. It was a little light colored for my taste when I got it, but I don't like widespread use of stain, so I just sealed it and then varnished it, and it darkened up considerably. Everyone I've talked to asks me where I got the mahogony. I got it at Riverside Lumber in New Orelans. Wish I could help you on the east coast, but I'm sure it's out there somewhere.
