I recently picked up an O'Day 22 with interior water damage, you can visit my blog at http://jaysoday22.blogspot.com. I was wondering if there is any cons to covering the bulkheads with a formica laminate. I was thinking it may be a good way to protect against the moisture we experience here in Washington state. I plan on using marine grade plywood for the bulkheads and exterior pressure treated plywood for the bunk areas.

Any thoughts?

Jay,
There is another material out there that is supposed to be even better than Formica which I can't remember the name of, but a friend of mine who is a professional cabinet maker and sailboat enthusiast, used it inside his Pearson Ariel and it came out great. He also used white oak extensively in this boat, including a frame that he built for his forward hatch to sit on. The new hatch that he bought didn't quite fit the contour of the bow, so he built the frame to bolt it too. A very good book to check out on this which has colored pictures through out it is entitled, "Fitting Out Your Boat" by Michael Naujok. A lot of people on this and other forums have inquired about what type of head covering materials to use in the cabin of their boats, and how to apply it. This book has all the answers to those questions, and it may be in your local library. Check it out.

Thanks for the info Joe! I ordered a copy of the book from Amazon, looks like it will come in handy.

You know Jay? One of my favorite books in my collection that I mentioned quite a bit on this forum is a book that is jam packed with modifications of a Flicka 20, and great hand drawn Illustrations which is entitled, "The Sailor's Sketchbook" by Bruce Bingham. It also shows mast raising rigs and describes how they work. When I mentioned it on the forum, I didn't know at the time that this book was out of print. I guess that there were a lot of inquiries for the book, and when these book collectors found out how much the book was in demand, they started asking outlandish prices for it, like over a hundred bucks. One of my friends was able to find this book somewhere, but I don't think that he paid that much money for it. As much as I treasure this book, I wouldn't pay that kind of money for it.
