Good morning all!
The bulkhead on my 222 creaks, groans and growls when sailing in some wind[ 10-15 kts ].Should I be worried?

The chain plates are attached to the bulkhead via "L" brackets. Make sure that the "L" brackets aren't cracked where it makes the bend and also make sure that the area under the chain plate covers isn't bulging. My late friend Chuck in Ohio experienced that same problem on his OD 222 Get Away. He had some longer brackets made up and he installed them himself. Years ago, my Starboard "L" bracket broke on my boat. I replaced everything with OD 25 chain plates and beefed up the V birth side of the bulkhead with oak boards and bolted them to the settees. Then, the chain plates started to leak and I had some covers made up and welded to the chain plates. Knock on wood, I haven't had a problem since. As long as these things that I mentioned are OK, and you stick with the stock 1/8" stays, it should be OK. Maybe you could check the bolts that hold the bulkhead at the bottom and make sure that they are tight. Good luck!

My pleasure, Dale. Penny and I went on a 9 hour cruise on Tuesday and sailed about 17 miles. Most of the sailing was up wind tacking. Surprisingly, we were able to come all the way back on Wednesday in only a couple of tacks. I picked a large bucket of Quahogs and Penny had a blast running all over the beaches of the Islands that we visited. It was really hot, but I had plenty of ice and water. Plus, I set up three polytarps on the boat and we were cool. I've had enough cruising for one week and my skin is darker now than it has been all summer. Today is going to be a "stay at home day."

Hi Dale,

Great idea! Nothing like keeping those joints lubricated with an adult beverage, all in moderation of course.

Like Joe, I recently completed a nice little cruise so not to be outdone, I thought I should post a couple of pictures. Left Milwaukee on a Tuesday and sailed to Sheboygan (about 50 miles). Then sailed to Algoma (about 60 miles), then through the canal at Sturgeon Bay to Peninsula Park in Green Bay (about 50 miles). We then tooled around Green Bay for a couple of days, and then trailered the boat back to Milwaukee. I'm already looking forward to the next cruise.

You took a large cruise. What an adventure! Nice pics! I hate drawbridges. I'm looking forward to the day when I won't have to open the drawbridge at the mouth of the Taunton River. The new bridge is going to be 60' high. The completion date is 2012 though. I may croak by then.

Keith,
Penny loves riding in the kayak more than she likes riding in the sailboat. She's not too fond of the boat healing on a close reach but she loves it when we're running across the bay. The great thing about sailing with a dog is that they don't give you any crap. Penny enjoys being with me and I think that she'd be miserable if I took off for a couple of days without her. We still have more adventures ahead of us yet.

about our animals

i have (had) a cat named penny. she was my cat. she slept at the foot of the bed when i slept...which is a bonding experience when you are a shift worker like me (we). but recently she got sick and i had to put her down. In the south, that means i had to use my rifle and take her life. That was tuff. I could have taken her to the vet, but it is a part of life to take care of that yourself if you are (were) a country boy. We do not have any dogs, but we have another cat named professor and he is pretty cool. we are going to see how he takes to the boat.

It's tough to lose a pet, but when their time comes you have to spare them the pain. My last dog, Ziggy, sailed with me right up to the end of her 11th year. She lost control of her hind legs with crippling Arthritis. She was in wicked pain so I brought her to the vet and had her put down. Penny was born in Little Rock Arkansas, about the same year and month that I lost Ziggy. Ziggy was one heck of a boat dog. She could dive right off the bow of my boat and swim underwater. Some day when I croak, I want to go to Heaven and see all my dogs waiting for me in a line, ready to play again.

Those dogs do look relaxed. I'm sure they enjoy your company as much as you enjoy theirs. We've got cats, but I don't think they would be up for sailing. Some day, maybe a sailing pooch.

I just got back from a three day cruise with Penny, out on Mount Hope Bay. I really can't think of anyone, including my wife, that I'd like to share my sailboat with. My wife got all cruised out back in the 1990s. She hates boating, period. The only time she'll sail with me is when I invite the grandchildren, otherwise she wants nothing to do with it. I rarely ever ask anyone to go sailing with me. I really love my solitude when it comes to getting out on my boat. I know that a lot of people may cringe at me for saying this, but if I had my choice, and I do, I always pick my dog for my First Mate. For one thing, I don't have a full blown insurance on my boat. I only have a $15 rider for liability that is covered under my Homeowners Insurance, to satisfy the yacht club requirements. Penny is great company on the boat. I keep her food on board and if she needs to use the head, I drop anchor and take her over to land in the kayak. She only weighs about 40 lbs, so she's great in a 9' kayak and can jump in and out of it from the sailboat. We had a blast together in one of my favorite coves. I dug a large bucket of Quahogs to bring home and I picked some cherry stones and cooked up a new recipe of "Clams Gazupo" on board. "Clams Gazupo" is like "Mussels Marinara", except that you use small quahogs or "Cherry Stones", instead of Mussels. I usually make my favorite recipe of "Narragansett Bay Style Clams Casino" but it was too hot to run my oven in the boat. Check out this site for three of my recipes:

I know what you mean about solitude Joe, When i mountain bike, i want it to just be me. I can set my own pace, stop and pick berries, look at stuff, or just lay by the lake. I often get invited to "go riding" but usually find some excuse not to go. Dogs don't really mix will with bikes as they tend to find the front wheel causing an over-the-handlbars meeting with mother earth!
Since I am not yet a sailor I can't say how I will feel about that, but think that Lynn and I will enjoy it together. Lake sailing is pretty quiet a calm around here, and we both like to just chill, read and chat, so i think most of the time it will be the two of us.

In tabbed in my bulkheads a couple of days ago, and also have all the teak installed and the bungs in. I am putting on the three coats of cetol between rainy days. So far so good.
Am awaiting some fasteners because the raised areas i fashioned to install the pulpit made my 1 1/2 inch bolts too short.

Where is Ed? I hope we didn't tick him off. He always has a lot of good advice.

Hi Keith,
I too, used to do a lot of bike riding on a 12 speed Motobecane back in the 1980s and 1990s. I'd take it back and forth to work about two and sometime three times a week, a distance of 13 miles each way. I kind of got away from that and started doing more sailing. My wife used to sail with me quite a bit back in the late 80s into the 90s, and my mother would always volunteer to watch the children while we went off for a few days cruise up the Cape to Cuttyhunk Island and Martha's Vineyard. We did that about four years in a row and it was the best and cheapest vacations that we ever took together. We anchored everywhere we went. We never rented moorings or slips in all the years that we sailed together. We only paid for food and ice and got our water anywhere that there was a faucet. We had some great times out there, and also had our share of storms and squalls which can be scary at times. Anyway, as I pointed out, the wife is all cruised out. Hence, the family pooch is my new First Mate.
I'm glad that you're making gains on getting your boat ready. The pains that you take now in performing the work needed, will pay off with a nicely finished product. Good luck with that.

I think that Ed is upgrading to a newer PC. That's probably why we haven't heard much of him lately.
