I am looking to buy an older 27' Catalina. I have noticed that the bulkhead where the upper shroud chainplates are attached is often wet and soft. Is this a typical problem? Is there a simple/cheap remedy?
This is a very common problem with the 27. The best solution is to replace the bulkheads. The job can be done for about $200. I clad mine with white formica, and it made the boat seem twice as large. Make sure that you seal the edges with West epoxy. thus will prevent the problem from reoccuring.
I always read stories and have seen pictures of failed chainplates due to soggy bulkheads. I have a '71, so I would think that mine would be bad, but they seem sound. They are ugly, and when I tried to paint them white, the oils stained the new paint. How did the white formica go in? I would appreciate the tips. Thanks,Tom
My next project will be to replace my bulkheads. They're not soggy or anything but I do see signs of occasional leakage & potential for problems. I plan on buying two sheets of nice mahogany veneered plywood and using the old bulkheads as templates. Boy, I sure do hope it's as easy as it sounds! Unfortunately, I know better. One more upgrade you really should consider is replacing the old single bolt lower chainplates with the U bolt upgrade kit from Catalina Direct.LaDonna
