Bulk Head has a soft spot

I recently removed the vanity sink from my O'day 25 and found that some water has created a soft spot where the counter support was located, the support bracket was completely rotted.I have removed the sink and counter tops and now need to fix the soft spot on the bulkhead. The soft spot is about 1" tall and about 3" long. It looks like the wood damage is only about 1/8" deep. It does not go through the bulkhead.My thought is to dig out the bad wood and fill it with epoxy, is their something better I could use?Any and all questions and responses would be greatly appreciated.EJ Tewsjennifer Lea

E.J., I think you have the remedy right. You can make your own thinned epoxy or buy Git Rot or others that will accomplish the same thing. You have removed the errant culprit, so any further degradation will cease. Its just a matter of filling in the damage. The area you describe is too small to compromise the bulkhead integrity, so its gonna be mainly a cosmetic fix. How do you propose to match the teak veneer, or are you going to bother?You mentioned you are going to turn this area into a hanging locker? Are you adding any storage down low where the cupboards were?Don

Soft Spot/Rot

Actually Don, I am going to replace the sink. I just cut out the plywood today and fitted the sink in the hole. My wife wanted the sink back in so the kids could wash their hands easily.We sail on a North Texas Lake and all of our sailing up until now have been day sailing. This year we plan a few over nighters, but nothing more than 1 night.As for the matching the veneer, the bad spot will be covered up by the counter tops.EJ
