Any words of wisdom before I cut a hole in my Hunter 23.5 for a compass ?I was thinking about installing a Ritchie BN 202 , or similar, in the starboard bulkhead. Thanks.
Dont do it like my friend did. He cut a hole and mounted his next to his electrical pannel. Every time he turns something on or off the compass moves about 10 or 15 degrees. Hes not a happy camper. Dont know if that would apply to your boat or not.
I installed a Saturn A140 on my 23.5 this past summer. Either port or starboard bulkhead is OK. Port side you may have to be concerned with heat from the stove if you use it. There is enough distance from the electrical panel on the staboard side where I don't get any deflection from the wiring. Good advice from Ed Allen on that depending on what may have been added to your boat. I stayed about two or three inches out from the companionway on the staboard side. In any case invest in a properly sized hole saw for the best cut.
Installed a Plastimo last summer on the port side bulkhead on my 23.5(See attached Link). Wired compass lights to my overhead light over the sink. Instructions came with compass to included template. Very easy job. Works great.
Galley and stove on the H23 are to port. A hole saw isn't mandatory. I cut the hole with a Dremel cutting bit and I suspect a Roto-Zip or even a small jigsaw would work just as well because the Plastimo has a generous flange. I wired my compass to the same breaker as the running lights so it lights automatically when I flip the switch.PeterH23 "Raven"
If you look at the BN202 installation sheet I think it states that the compass must be vertical. That implies the need for a mounting ring if the bulkhead is slanted. If the 26 is like the 23.5 the bulkhead isn't vertical. According to Saturn the A140 can be mounted at a max angle of 25 deg. off vertical. The drawback I have with the A140 is I can't find a rear cover to hide the back of it in the cabin.
Any round plastic container should fit the bill. Try an empty margarine tub or ice cream container. Tack a couple of tabs around the rim and attach it to the bulkhead with either screws or Velcro.PeterH23 "Raven"
Sorry I took so long Jonathan, Yes, I was ableto run the wire between the outside bulkhead and the "inside" bulkhead/headliner to get to the galley light? It was a very easy job. The back side of the compass did extend out and it came with it's own cover (professional job). Well take a picture of the inside for you. By when do you need it? Frank
