Hi,
I have an '85 O'Day 26 that has the mast compressing the cabin top, with a depression on top, and a small bulge on the inside. I have noticed on the 25's, the compression post is right under the mast. My compression post is just aft of where the mast is. Could the compression post have moved somehow and all that is needed is to move it forward and back in place, or do I have some damage in the cabin top?

On my '77 ODay 25 the compression post is solid wooden post that is glassed onto where the keel attached to the bilge.....is your post wooden or metal?....a PO of my boat replaced the compression post because the bottom of the port started to rot from the bottom up...thereby shortening its length....another consideration is that you have hidden wood rot in the balsa core of your deck right under the mast step....you would need to remove the mast to determine if you have deck compression issues....

have you noticed the need for tightening your standing rigging recently...in either scenario your rigging would be loosening.

one of my club members on his 25 cut a section @ 15" wide X 20-24" long (bow to stern) size needed to open it up correct and remove rot. removed ALL the rot and fill in the void with resin and mat. BEFORE you do this you need to CONFIRM the stabliity of the support post-- replace FIRST if necessary so you get the correct curvature(sp) to the top. Remove ALL items screwed to the deck and reattach them to a MAST PLATE, this will put all future stress on the plate and not on the deck and NO more holes to leak. I plan on this project this late summer time and I have a piece of plywood with 4 dowels to keep the correct position of the mast bolts. If my memory is correct the mast has a 2 degree aft tilt. Good luck. and let us know on your progress and pictures of process.

1. I have a an 85 O26.

2. Several others have 26's and several have rebuilt all or parts. Check archives for both 26 and 25 because 26 was merely updated 25 - ask Rudy.

3. Several have rebuilt cabin top under mast. Delamination was a common problem and needs to be fixed as mentioned by Rich, Rick, Keith, et al. Find their discussion and pictures in archives.

4. My compression post is just far enough aft of mast to allow for mast bolts to be worked from inside. Mast should be down to move compression post.

5. You need to fix problem before you sail any more because as described you could have catastrophic failure and ruin mast and endanger occupants.

Hi seeadler1,
your deck under your mastplate /tabernacle is surely rotted. once you get the mast dropped this winter, go ahead and plan on repairing it, it is not a hard repair, and i think we can talk you through it. you can take a peak at my posts regarding my repairs by clicking on my avatar to the left of this post, and choosing find prior post in the drop down. i think they started around march of 2009. also you will see some pictures of my repair in the photoalbum on the right side of the screen of my profile.

The compression post should be attached to the edge of the port bulkhead which is inline with the mast.

Your picture is not accurate for O'Day 26. On the 26 the mast is not directly over the compression post. My thru bolts are immediately fore of the compression post.

However, the compression post is grooved to fit bulkhead.

I do not have picture, maybe Keith does?

there is a picture about three posts into the thread accessed by the link i had provided a couple of posts above above. At this point, i have alread loosened the bolts and removed them. but basicly, the top of the comp post is just aft of where the mast is mounted to the deck, with a slight overlap. the rear portion of the mast overlaps the forward edge of the compresion post.
but i see that the one who started this thread has not replied to any of our replies, so we seem to be talking to ourselves haha.
