It appears that all the threads regarding peltier units are "closed". So here goes......
I've finally decided that a built-in Peltier will suffice for me.
I expect the unit to consume 4 amps(single unit), or 7+ amps if I work for further cooling(2 units).
For the past 2 years I've been using a Coleman 12-volt peltier cooler with very . . . good . . . results. In fact, last August(near September) I accidently froze my 1% milk . . . rock-solid. Not slushy solid, but absolutely rock-hard solid.
I concur with the statements of 30-40 below ambient temperature and relaize that in 90 degrees, this would result in a "cool" 50-60 degrees within.
Difference is, I rarely run(or open) the unit during the day. Sometimes I'll run it for 2-3 hours before 11am, then run it for 2-3 hours about 6pm, BUT, I always run the unit between 12pm and 5 or so am the next morning, while the temperatures are at their lowest. It makes a big difference(30-40 below 60-80 instead of 80-90) and results in using 4 amps per hour for about 1/2 day for an average of about 2 amps. Not bad.
This year I decided to use "ICE", either as a frozen 1/2 gallon jug or with some of those freezy things. Now, in 95+ degree weather, my milk is almost too cold to drink fast cause it's so cold and the unit runs even less time now.
So, I'm now seriosly considering using a peltier unit(or two), along with super-insulating my boat's cooler. Actually I like the idea of a relatively small "cold" area(for drinks), along with a larger kinda-cold area(everything else).
While a real compressor-type fridge would be somewhat colder and might even offer a small freezer, I don't think they are much more energy efficient if the cooler insualtions are both similar(most peltier coolers are not "very" well insulated).
I'll miss a freezer, but to think of it, the only time I go into the freezer at home is to get ice for the boat. My diet does not include a lot of those things that need freezing.
Anyway, I expect to go peltier and am figuring out the best route to do this and the best way to super-insulate the cooler on my 75 Newport 28.
