Anyone out there built their own radar tower? I have a pretty good idea of how to go about it but thought if anyone had any previous experience and/or ideas they'd like to share, I'd like to hear them.

Nice N Easy

There was a thread

There was a thread on here short time ago. Showing pics and all. Someone built one using the backstay. A very attractive and well thought out approach. Matter of fact I am seriously thinking of making myself a copy when I put radar on my boat in the near future. Do a search, it wasn't that long ago.

saw that

I saw that thread when it came out and at the time I was seriously considering a backstay mount, possibly gimballed and upwards of $1000 or more. I'm a pretty handy guy and figured that I could cut that number by about $850, non-gimballed by building a tower. I just thought if anyone had gone this route, they might have some words of wisdom.

tower

Building your own tower might not be as easy as you think. I have considerable experience in metal fabrication and know that a lot of equipment is necessary, more than the typical home shop. There's cutting, forming, bending, welding, and probably polishing, and none of that is easy with stainless steel. But, if you have the skills, tools and equipement, go for it. Take lots of pics and keep us informed of your progress.

Interesting photos...

Is there a link to a discussion? Materials? Costs?

Thanks Tim...

It was more of a general question thrown out to the general (or admiral) public. I don't think my backstay would be very supportive of your design. I was looking more towards a mini tower, or even better some kind of framing. I am just looking at what's available if I ever get a small radar for my boat. Key word, if. But that looks nice, Tim.
