Hi all, I'm planning on waxing my 170 (since she's stored, uncovered, outside year round) Saturday, but I'm unsure what wax is best. I've used standard Turtle Wax in the past, but wonder if anyone's found something better. PS, I may sound the abusive skipper by storing her without a cover, but I find that our humidity causes mildew spots on the surface of the boat, even when it's only loosely covered. Thanks for any waxing advise you can offer. By the way, I already avoid excessive & hard rubbing, as the friction can melt the ACP. Mike G. -s/v Lil Sport- Alachua, FL

Wax

Practical Sailor published an article on wax in the Nov 15 issue. 27 waxes of various kinds were exposed to the New England weather for 365 days. Paste waxes did best. Collinite Paste Wax provided the best protection with Meguiar's Mirror Glaze the runner up.

Thanks!

Thanks, George. Meguiar's is some great stuff. I've used it on my car and love the stuff. I think I'll give it a shot. Mike

3M Marine Rubbing Compound/Wax

I have used 3 M Marine Compound and Wax on my boat with great results. I have found that if you check with most professional boat detailers they use 3 M Marine products as well. Important to note that these work best when a high speed buffer is used. I don't like car waxes on boats, just don't seem to have a long life where as the 3 M Marine compound prepares the surface for the wax. Once complete the shine lasts for over a year on the hull and redoing the job is relatively easy the next year.
