Hey all

So I spent the past day and a half buffing and waxing my new-2-me Hunter. The port side of the boat came out ... AMAZING (I'm very happy with it) and the starboard side came out .... NICE (I'm happy but not as happy).

So here are some variables that might explain the difference and I'm wondering if y'all have any insights.

I buffed the entire boat with Maguiar's then pressure washed off the residue & dried the boat with a towel. Then I applied Nu Finish scratch doctor to the port side.... after wiping it off, I was unimpressed with the shine so I waxed it a second time with Maguiar's car wax and toweled off the dry residue. That came out AMAZING so I then applied Maguiar's to the starboard side. After removing that, it was NICE but noticeably less glossy than the port side.

Was the difference the Nu Finish pre-wax?

Or...

I did notice that the P.O. docked his boat "port-to" at the very end of a set of covered slips... so I 'm wondering if possibly the difference is not the Nu Finish but the fact that the starboard side of this boat was exposed to full sun for 21 years and the port side to partial shade? The vinyl pin-stripes on the starboard side are noticeably more worn than the port which makes me think it might be sun-damage.

I guess next spring I can try the Nu Finish on the starboard side first and see if that is the difference.

Don't know at what latitude the boat was kept for those 2 decades but here in Florida, it's common practice to 'rotate' the uncovered boats so as to share the uv expose between sides. At least by those who are ambivalent about stern-to docking.

That is not to say your variation in waxing changed anything. It probably had an equal or greater effect than past history. I know some here have an unnatural affliction with polish/wax procedures and seem to spend more time on that than required maintenance but rest assured it has little if any impact on much except aesthetics.

Did you work from front to back on each side or did you go around the boat in a circle? Are you left or right handed? After the first side, were you in a hurry to get the other side done? Just wondering. ;)

i believe that "nu finish" is a silicon wax. see maine sails page about buffing and waxing. it wont let let you down,. may be alittle more work but its real!
silicon waxes may disappoint you in the long run.

cheers

Ditto on the MaineSails techniques for compounding and polishing. Using the processes he recommends, the wax doesn't add much if any shine, as the shine comes from the compound and polish. The wax just adds protection. He recommends Collinite Fleet Wax...good stuff, and is a true wax.
