Buccaneer rope?

I ordered some Sta-Set from a company to replace my genoa sheets. Got an order confirmation and invoice showing Sta-Set. When it came it didn't look like Sta-Set and the shipping document said "LS" which I assumed was for Samson LS. When I called the vendor about it they said it was made by Buccaneer Rope Company and was what they used as Sta-Set (low stretch polyester double braid). The appropriate people to speak to at the vendor are out this week but besides the fact that I feel I got baited and switched, has anybody ever heard of Buccaneer rope and know of it's quality compared to New England Sta-Set or Samson LS?

Hmm... I bought some 3/16" double braid polyester from www.onlineropestore.com, at $0.25/ft, for the express purpose of tying down my tarp. It was the least expensive I could find, less than Novabraid at sailcare.com, and certainly less than NER or Samson. Now, I'm curious about the Buccaneer Rope. Sometimes, you don't need good stuff, or fancy stuff. This inexpensive stuff I have is perfect for utility cord, hank on jib downhauls, etc. Buccaneer Ropes does not appear to sell to the public - at least no pricing on their website.

As for the original poster... well, you could take your chances, or you could send it back, because it is clearly not what was advertised or what you thought you were buying. At least, as you state in the post. If it was advertised as "double braid polyester" and you just THOUGHT you were buying Sta-Set, that's a different story...

Me, I like New England Ropes Salsa for my sheets, but I also have a small boat.

What is the name of the VENDOR? Mail it back to them and call your credit card company. They'll take care of it. OR ... keep the product and chalk it up to experience. There are too many good online vendors selling what they advertise at excellent prices.

I'd call the credit card company, but hold on to the rope until the vendor contacts you about the stopped payment and "would you please return the rope".

Just a reminder that you often have only a 30 day window to take action through your credit card company.

Sorry for disappearing for a few days. I was out and then trying to get hold of the right person at the vendor to explain what happened. She said they hadn't sold Sta-Set for a couple of years and their web site needed to be changed. I found that a little disingenuous since they have obviously known about this for a while and their order confirmation also said the product was Sta-Set. Completely un-apologetic. Anyway, they sent a return shipping slip, I'll get my money back and have ordered some Sta-Set from another vendor. It was Seco South. Not trying to bad mouth them but the whole thing did leave kind of a bad taste in my mouth about their business practice.

Well, there's my answer. I was looking for the most inexpensive 3/16" double braid polyester I could find to use as a hank-on jib downhaul, or tarp tie downs, or general utility cord. My previous low cost champ is www.onlineropestore.com at $0.25/ft. After poking around my favorite online stores, prompted by this discussion of Buccaneer rope, I have now discovered a new low cost winner: Samson LS at $0.24/ft from here, www.sailboatowners.com.

Turns out Seco South with their Buccaneer bait-and-switch (or deliberate mis-advertising?) isn't even in the running, as they don't list a 3/16".

Last winter, at the Atlantic City Boat Show, I bought some curious 1/4" polyester utility cord from the Online Rope Store guys. 200' for $40.00. It's a braided cover over a parallel core. It's very soft, and I think it pulls down a bit narrower than 1/4". Anyway, it's been useful for stuff on the boat, in fact, it's what I tie the fenders on with. It also was perfect for the pennant halyards on the committee boat. We'll probably be replacing more pennant halyards this spring, so I'll visit them again in AC this February. They do not list it on the web site, I think they make it up special for boat shows...

Sta-set is a NER trademark. The retailer was obviously wrong to substitute.

Defender sells lots of Bucanneer rope. I was very happy with some of their 3/4" 8 plait for an anchor line. According to their website they've been around since 1975. If I'm not mistaken, that's about as long as NER. The rope is made at their factory in Alabama.

And although I've bought a lot of NER rope over the years, I was disheartened to see that they were acquired by the German company, Teufelberger. NER is now a small part of an industrial company best known for crane wire rope and plastic strapping. It's hard to see how that will be good for us in the long run.
