The Keys have a number of websites that are loaded with info. Use a search engine to get the urls and you'll find everything that you're looking for. But if you're visiting the Sea Scouts, why don't you go sailing with them on one of their boats?
I'll try the web search, but I wanted "local knowledge". Our troop is going to use Sea Base boats, but the girls of the family may want to hang out while the boys are sailing. After the troop sail, we may want to take a family cruise.
My h is an assistant scoutmaster for our boy scout troop and have been playing around w/ this idea for our troop .. Please let us know how it is going and did you do fundraising to get there?? How much is it costing each scout? thanks, Joyce
Last summer I sent my daughter on this Discovery program run by Seaworld.Its a 4-5 day deal where they spend the first nite at the dolphins tank (Orlando) then are bussed to Pigeon Key about the middle of the Keys next to Marathon. They learn about marine biology and do alot of snorkeling. She was swimming around with barracuda (get rid of jewelry - shiny makes for a lure), nurse and lemon sharks and sea mantas. She loved it. The nights we spent in the old barracks of the builders of the railroad system (hot). Check it out at Seaworld. Jim McCue
Check out the seaBase website http://www.bsaseabase.org/index.htm If you are involved in scouting and like sailing this sounds like the "Key" pardon the pun. It takes a lot of advance planning as reservations are limited. We won't be going until 2002 but I'll try to remember to post news to this website.
