The previous owner on my 1982 H27 replaced 3 of 4 thru hulls with marelon. the 4th is the original bronze thru hull for the sink drain (under starboard lazarette in cockpit). It has been working fine but it has been turning green over the past year at a steady rate. Do i have a serious situation here or natural aging? chris

Bronze Will Turn Green

If you see some redish coloration, it is a sign of electrolysis. RD

All of mine

have a green fuz to them, but when I scratch to get deeper, it's still bronze color. I've been told mine are fine so my guess is yours are too.

no red or pink, just green fuzz

Rick no red or pink, just a green fuzz like Franklin. While at the boat today i noticed some water intrusion from recent storms. I believe i traced the leak to its origin and siliconed the area, hopefully preventing any additional water. however the plywood square the thru-hull is mounted through has gotten wet and the very top layer has started to delaminate. is this going to be a serious situation? chris

Don't think that the original was a ball valve..

Chris: I do not think that the original was a seacock or a ball valve. They were gate valves. If that is the case, you should change it regardless of the color.

Probably No Immediate Problem

The through hull bases are often plywood. The bigger question is why it is getting wet. It should be dry. Either the valve or fitting is leaking. Eventually, you will want to replace it, but the next haul out is probably OK. If you are not comfortable with it, or think it is failing, you can get a short haul at the yard and replace it PDQ. thanks

The plywood was getting wet from a leak around the last sternrail bolt. With all the rainwater runoff we have had this past month, there was a significant amount of water that had leaked through, run down the inside of the hull, past (and across) the plywood for the valve, and collected in a non draining area just below the bottom drawer under the sink. I have (hopefully) addressed the water intrusion problem at this point. And yes, the thru hull valve is the origiginal gate valve :( chris
