broker tricks, what should a newbie beware of...

Ive seen a broker ad for a 72 caalina tall rig for 2900 US. broker says it is being sold as is where is and must move soon....claim it needs bottem paint and buff and some cosmetic work, pictures look ok but dont tell only so much. If I decide to go ahead I will have asurvey done because I cant look at it personally. Claims to have a decent inboard, and good sail inventory. How do you know when a deal is to good to be true or when you should be running the opposite way. What shou ld a new buyer be aware with respect to broker tricks and tactics.

Saw the same ad

I've seen the same ad and it raises the same questions for me. My guess is that because it is a '72 it doesnt have a holding tank, there are no backing plates on anything, the keel bolts need to be replaced and glassed over, the lines need replacing, and the sails aren't in the greatest of shapes. Also, there's no telling what condition the hull is in. But it doesnt hurt to look. Good luck to you.
