Or the title of this post could be "Do you know where your emergency tiller is?"

Out sailing Saturday afternoon in 10-12 with gusts to 20. Just completed a tack when i heard a bang and lost all steerage, wheel spinning freely. Luckily i had plenty of searoom so at least i was able to take my time. I got the engine cranked and pulled in the jib all the while trying to remember where i had stowed the emergency tiller. After rummaging around a bit i located it, pulled the access panel and got the tiller seated in the slots. I was then able to motor to a protected cove to sort things out.

The tiller worked pretty well but due to its design it's uncomfortable and with engine power applied its hard to control. I'd sure hate to travel very far using it because it will wear you out.

The starboard cable broke at the pully coming out of the pedistal. I was able to find and order replacement cables from the Edson website this morning so i guess the real fun will be next week trying to figure out how to get it all back together.

For anybody who has never messed with the emergency tiller i suggest you take a little time and pull yours out, fit it on the rudder post and get an idea of how everything handles. Or at the very least find it and put it somewhere you won't forget where you put it.

I have a center cockpit model and the steering quadrant is under the aft bed so the emergency tiller that I found in the boat looked like an exhaust tail pipe off a car but you would need two people.....one to steer and one at the helm to give directions (I could just imagine how that would go with my wife :cussing: ) so I being in the electrical business got me some conduit and couplings and modified it to fit and came up with system that one person could operate, I never tried it but it'll go on my list this season just to make sure

RAD, sounds like the E-tiller on an O'DAY 32 would be akin to using the "whip-staff" steering on the MAYFLOWER. The Helmsman was actually below deck on that vessel....... had to rely on the on-deck watch to guide him. Not something that I'd want to do all the way trans-Atlantic, kind of gives me new appreciation for what they went through. On a similar note.... you won't find me in control of a submarine either..... something about hurtling along underwater and unable to see where I'm going freaks me out! I like to be able to see where I'm going, visually!

Sunbird I hear ya,
Think about someone below (wife) and you want to turn to port she has to push the rudder to starboard......so do you do the thinking for her or let her do the thinking....NOT, I'll take my chances on my one man system and when I test it if there's a problem we'll figure out a solution

Great pictures for the center cockpit configuration. This is the only way to go if you single sail.
