Much to my dismay, I found the long, fixed portlight on my 280 cracked in two the other day. I am not sure how this happened although I supsect sun, age and me walking on the cabin top may all have had a role in the break.

The vertical crack goes clean through and is located right over the stringer that separates the port from the inside. That's a poor explanation! What I mean is, the crack is located where you can see it from the outside (where the portlight is one long piece) but not from the inside (where it appears to be two separate ports because of the stringer).

I am very concerned that this will lead to significant water intrusion so I need a permanent fix. Some have suggested different forms of super glue but I am thinking a total repalcement is called for.

Does anyone know if Hunter would have repalcement parts for a 1996 boat? If not, would a glass shop be able to fashion something? How difficult do you figure the installation would be?

There have been some posts of late regarding replacing/recaulking ports and windows such as we have. I think the type caulk was Dow 795. If the crack is where i think it is and totally hidden by the stringer, there may very well be a caulk bedding for that area and no leaks would immediately insue. Have you tried a leak test? You may be able to use a sharp tool and scrpe a V in the crack and lay in some fresh caulk to seal if there is caulking behind the crack.

Also, check with Hunter. They may be able to supply the piece or give you dimensions and a reference for a supplier. Good Luck!
