I have a 1987 Hunter 23 with a current very broken mast at the spreaders. According to what I can find the mast is 33 feet with everything internal and is tappered. One of two things caused it to break, and at this point the cause is irrelevant. I am in desperate straights for a new mast. I have thought used but was advised that that may not be the best route to go. At this point I found 2 places to get a mast US Spars in Florida and the other is Chesapeake Spars in MD. I am getting no prices from them and not sure if there are other reputable places or not. On top of all this there is the insurance company that does not seem real thrilled with fixing the mast but rather totaling the boat. From what the people at the marina said that the boat appears to have sustained no other damage. It did not damage any fiberglass and that the mast fell on the sails which were bagged and cushioned the fall. Does anyone have any recommendations of Mast builders that are reputable? I would appreciate any help you can give.

Some pictures would help here.. Don't know exactly where you are but around the west bank of the Cheseapeke, there are a few reputable riggers that could help.. It may be that the mast can be sleeved.. it may be that a used or new one is in order. Get it to a rigger who can evaluate it and comment.. If you show up at his shop with the mast alone on the trailer or the mast on the boat on a trailer, most riggers would be able to help. A used mast, correctly inspected can be fine.. It doesn't have to be tapered but it does have to have enough cross section to not buckle.. again, A rigger should be consulted with this one.. Good Luck

I wouldn't worry to much about the taper on the replacement mast, taper would add a great deal to the expense.

My 23 does not have a tapered mast, that was a new addition for later years.
Insurance will likely total the boat, these boats are not particularly valuable and masts are not cheap. You are probably on your own here!

Check with some of the local marinas, salvage yards, used boat stuff places, etc. They're all over the place. if you can get an extrusion close to the right size and it is to long just cut off what you don't need. This may take some detective work. I know on the west coast there are a few places where you could maybe get it. Try Minnies in Newport Beach. Google it and give them a call. They may be able to steer you, pardon the pun, in the right direction in your area. Good luck, Fair winds.
