I just purchased a 1986 Hunter 23 in relatively great condition. I brought it out to the lake to get it in the slip, and in the process of raising the mast I managed to break the mast step. Most everything seems undamaged except for the actual step and the bottom of the mast itself, where the forward bolt was torn through the end of the mast. The top section of the plate looks slightly bent out, so I'll most likely replace that as well.
So my question is this, how important is that bolt? This is a Kenyon mast (3350 MORC I believe), however looking at the equivalent Dwyer mast, it doesn't look like they even have the mast step bolted in, but I want to be sure.
Ideally I would simply replace the step. If this won't work the alternative would be to cut a few inches off and redrill the holes. I believe I would then need to make an extension to avoid a host of problems, so I'd like to avoid this route if possible.
Any suggestions?
