broken handle on thru hull

I just opened the thru hull on the head sink and the handle broke off in mmy hand. Luckily, it is still in the closed position. How should I proceed. Can the handle be replaced without removing the thru hull? I have seen replacement handles in the boat stores like West, etc. I know I should replace the thru hull at haul out, but what to do in the meantime? Thanks in advance Barry

Valve?

I am assuming the valve is on a thruhull fitting. If this is the case, plug thruhull from outside (softwood plug) and remove and replace broken vavle. Do not replace with a gate valve. Use bronze and chrome ball type. available at Home Depot. Don't forget the teflon tape. Good luck red

Not sure that I agree. . .

with Red. You do not state what type of valve or thru-hull. Is it a true seacock? Or a ball valve or gate valve(faucet handle)? A seacock usually has bolts that come through from the outside making it really hard to remove in the water. If it is a gate valve then you could plug it from outside and easily remove the insides and replace the handle. Just depends, how long would you be without a sink drain if you wait until haulout? If it is like my H37C the sink thru-hull is quite large and in a tight place to work. I would wait.

I Agree with Ed

I broke the handle on my sink drain a few years ago right before a cruise. I had the boat hauled to replace it (expensive job). I tried to replace it with a bronze valve on the nylon thru-hull and the threads were a mismatch. I stripped the threads and was forced to replace the thru-hull as well as the valve (I stayed with Marelon) because a bronze thru-hull wasn't readily available. Be careful trying to put bronze on nylon.

Handle

Need more info. Is it a gate valve or ball valve? Is it bronze or Marelon valve? Is the thru hull the valve is attached to bronze or Marelon?

ball valve

It is a ball valve, I like the idea of plugging the thru hull from outside and then replacine the ball valve. Would save a haul out. The sink is not critical because I also have a galley sink I can use. Thanks for the info. I should have known to give more info --duh. Thanks again. Next question. Can the rubber boot, hose, or whatever it is called that connects the hull with the packing be replaced without hauling or am being too optimistic. The clamps are rather corroded and I am a bit worried about that. I looks like a short piece of exhaust hose that has clamps on both ends and attaches to the packing gland assembly. Thanks again for the info you guys are grea Barry

Not in the water.

You could cut the old hose off of the shaft log but how would you install a new one? I guess if you are really brave you could remove the shaft at the coupler and slide it back. Then you would have to remove the stuffing box, slide the new hose over the shaft, and reinstall everything(see Link). All the while the water would try to get in through the shaft log. Rags stuffed around the shaft could keep out most of the water I suppose. Why not just replace the clamps and wait until you haulout?

thanks

Replace the clamps and wait for haulout good idea and thanks Barry

Quick Throw Valve

Instead of a gate valve I would replace it with a quick throw valve. Gate valves are unreliable. I would do this out of the water during the fall haul out. All the valves except those I've replace were gate valves on my h27. I aquired a distaste for gate valves while on submarine duty.
