I am doing my centerboard in January

I am pulling my centerboard this January to fix it not coming down and replacing the painter. A buddy of mine is a rigger and is supose to inform me how to pull the board. As soon as I learn the process. I will post it. You should check out www.drmarine.com The owner of that shop is a former employee of Oday. Get the phone number from the site and call him, (I forgot his name). If he gives you an answer, please post a responce. Hopefully I will have an answer before Christmas. Kinne

Centerboard removal

Ok, now I know why a yard charges a million dollars to do this kind of work. It is a pain in the a*s. Some basic tools are needed. You will need a car jack, sander/grinder, small hammer that has a plastic peen, a sledge hammer, a large steel bar, a fish tape, a magic marker, an assortment of tools if needed and a nice day. Oh a couple of cold beers would also help. The boat will need to be hauled and in the sling and have the centerboard in the up position. With the plastic hammer tap on the keel in the area where you think the pin is located, the tapping should sound different once you located the pin, another method is to take the fish tape and push it up the centerboard trunk until you hit the bottom of the pin. Mark the tape and also mark the bottom of the keel as a reference to its position, take the marked fish on the outside of the keel and mark at the end of the tape. This is the position of the bottom of the pin. Do this on the other side of the keel too. Now comes the fun part. With a grinder, grind away the fiberglass where the pin is located, until you can see the pin. Do this on the other side too. Feather back the glass to a 1/2' to 1/2' area. Now drop the centerboard to the down position. Have the car jack under the centerboard. Make sure you have a block of wood between the jack and the centerboard. Raise the jack so there is a slight pressure on the centerboard. Use a sledge hammer and the steel bar and hammer out the pin. Slowly lower the jack and remove the centerboad and detach the painter. Now the boat can be lowered from the sling and chocked while you hunt down all of the assocate parts for the centerboard, pin and painter Make what ever repair to the centerboard that are needed. I would also suggest that you clean the trunk with a pressure washer and try to get all of the sea critters out. With a very long handle paint brush, paint with bottom paint in the centerboard trunk When installing the centerboard, reinstall the painter. Put the boat back into the slings, put the centerboard back on the auto jack and lift it back into the trunk You and your helper will need to wiggle the centerboard until the holes allign. A couple of beers before you align the holes usually make the job go easier. Grease the pin with marine grease and put the pin back into place. Wipe all grease off the ends and clean the whole area around the pin on the keel with a good solvent. Raise the centerboard and have the boat taken out of the slings and chocked in the usual maner Prep the glass area around the pin on the keel and reglass the holes. That is how it is supose to be done. I am repairing my centerboard next month and will post the results, with a picture. on this forum Kinne

Kinne, The mounting plates are obvious

you don't need to bang around. My point is, if he is going to it himself an in depth explaination is in order, If he has know idea of what the bottom of the boat looks like, I am not going in to that depth of explaination. r.w.landau
