Thanks to D & R Marine, & Rudy Nickerson
Broke Our rudder on Wed July 30th and Back to racing Wed Aug 13th. NOW THAT IS SERVICE !! Considering the boat is in Western Lake Erie ( Oh ) and Rudy is in ( Ma ).. Turns out D & R Marine made the blade from scratch not an on the shelf item. Rudy explained ( My 222 HIN # starts with SUR,, made in Santa ANA Calif ) that through the years of production of the O-222's there were some variances when he asked me to send the broken off part that goes up into the rudder /tiller head. We first talked on the phone Thurs the 30th, sent the broken off top piece Fri, arrived in MA. Mon, Mold was made. blade was cast. and by Thurs the blade was cleaned up, and given to UPS late Thurs, arrived in Ohio Monday. Put on the boat Wed Morning and sailed all day long and did a third place in our races Wed evening. IT JUST DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT!
It was a pleasure to do business with Rudy and D & R. Because our old blade had a SS bushing at the pivot point Rudy had a ( time consuming ) issue with drilling the hole for this bushing ( apparently not standard ) and so he ran overtime on the job but he held to his price quote. THANK YOU RUDY !
Glad I choose this route as the new blade is much stronger built, and is seamless on the edges too, so water intrusion should not be an issue. The original blade was not only foam filled but because it was made in two pieces and joined and glued at a seam all around the edge allowed the weaker construction. I can certainly tell this new blade is a big improvement. Also this keep my 222 O'Day original. It sailed well then ,,, and it sails well again!
I love this boat !!
