All, I did the stupid thing and while launching at at a new Marina drove under a tree and broke my mast. I need a new or used mast for a '96 H23.5. All seems to be good except the mast, broken at the spreaders and the foot that pins to the cabin top. There is no damage to the fiberglass. Will need new mounting brackes for the sreaders too. The boat is also equiped with a CDI roller. Any information as to where I can get a used mast is greatly appreciated. If not a contact at hunter for a new one. Doodo happens.

Mike: This stuff happens. This is what insurance is all about. Contact your insurance agent so they can get their end of the deal going. For a replacement you may as well check with Hunter first, but Seco or Rig-Rite are your probable sources for this stuff. You may not be able to get an exact replacement and I think you are going to S--T when you find out how much this is going to cost.

ZSpar

They are in Florida, on the east coast somwhere I think. I had the number and everything but I am in the middle ov moving and everything is on the moving van somwhere. They have a very good website, whis I had the link for you. My suggestion would be to get with them and then drag your boat down there to put it on and spend a week sailing. I suspect that the shipping is going to be a big part of the expense.

YOur boat had a Z-Spar mast on it. Z spar no longer is in the US but I will not discuss why as they cost me money too along with many others. However, do not fret. You can get a replacement mast through US Spars. Call 386-462-3760 and ask for Julian. He is making one for me. Crazy Dave Condon

Hit a tree also with my 93 H23.5

Did essentially the same thing. With the mast up drove too close to a tree. Broke the mast at the spreader and broke the mounting plate. Mast was manufactured by US Spars and they were very responsive in building a replacement (given that this was at the beginning of this year's sailing season and they had a backlog, the 6 weeks to get a replacement did not seem excessive.) Just one note of caution - when I received the mast the mast foot was too wide for the mounting plate on the cabin top. Didn't talk to Jullian directly about the problem (talked to his secretary and she sent a replacement with pop rivets) so do not know why this happened. Also the mast interior had a T shaped extrusion that hit the side of the replacement mast foot so I had to modify the mast foot. The mast will come with wiring for the masthead light (but no light so save the old one) - Jullian will also install wiring for a UHF antenna if you ask for that. You will also need to install the halyards/topping lift - mast comes with small lines installed that you sew, tape and tie to the halyard and then pray mightly as you carefully feed the halyards through the mast.

Ouch!

I did one better. I demasted my previous boat by backing out of a state run parking area and acess ramp. It is the only one I know of that crosses over a road, which like many roads has electric and telephone poles w/wires. Ouch, ouch. Luckily the mast only hit the telephone wires. I guess I should say lucky for my friend who was sitting in the boat holding on to the boom as I was backing up. Mike, where do you sail? I leave in Allentown and sail mostly in Rehoboth Bay. I tried looking you up on the owners list to respond to you. Bill K S/v Slapshot

Safety

So often, folks want to get the mast up and sometimes forget to look upwards from where the mast goes up to the ramp. Please as a general reminder, look up and even the best of us have screwed up too. Crazy Dave Condon
