I recently bought a 1987 Cal 22. Although there seems to be some evidence of neglect and weathering, it seems to posess a fair amount of promise as far as sailing ability is concerned. There seems to be very little information available on the web for this model. I had raced PHRF on larger boats in the past and after looking at the design of the hull, I thought that this may be a fun boat to race, too. I am wondering if anyone has any information regarding the manufacturer's specifications, production numbers, and tuning guide for this model. Any information that you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

Woops

Sorry about that. I linked you to a Cal 20, not a 22. Don't see anything over there on the 20.

Thanks, anyways!

Thanks, anyways--I will keep trying. Someone out there may have the original brochure or other information that they could pdf. Matt

Info On Cal 22

I have a Cal 22, built I'm told in 1995, and I guess by Lear. I have a promotional brochure which is all glamor and not much else. It doesn't even list the manufacturer or an address. I'll be happy to scan and send it to you if you would like it. Do you have any specs on the boat. The bulk (lower part)of my rudder snapped off today and somehow I need to replace it. But I don't have a record of the total length of the rudder. Would you happen to know? I'd appreciate it. Ron

Rudder

Thanks! I would love anything that you may have on the boat. Through my investigations, I was able to find data on the sails and some specifications from the sail manufacturers. But if you need explicit measurements on the size and shape of the rudder, I would be happy to measure and photograph my rudder for you. Matt

Cal-22 Stuff

Sorry, Matt. Didn't get to this right away. I will scan the brochure as soon as I get back to Baltimore and e-mail to you. Thanks for the offer of the rudder photo. Believe it or not, there is someone down the road who has a Cal 22 and will let me size it up and photo so I can try to dupe. I think a J-22 rudder will work, but can't find one of those either. Did find a solid 1" oak rudder blade that might or might not work, but only cost $30. Waterline systems will sell me a new J-22 rudder for $950, but that's a lot to rish if it can't be modified to fit.

Another rudder source

Ron, Thanks, again, for the offer to copy the brochure. I am really looking forward to receiving it. It is great to hear that there is a Cal 22 near you. That should make measurements much simpler for you. You may also want to contact the Foss Company in California. They originally manufactured the rudder for the Cal 40 and have made rudders for many other boats. I used to own an Olson 25, which was manufactured by Erickson, and Foss made the rudder. If the rudder turns out to be too expensive, they may be able to provide you with a template. So, if you are interested, their web address is: www.fossfoam.com. Good luck! Matt

Cal 22' owner

I own a 1987 Cal 22' shoal draft version, which I purchased about a month ago. I have the original owners manual; if you would like a copy I'd be glad to burn you one. My initial impressions are that the boat seems very quick relative to others in ~6-12 knot winds, but absolutely needs a reef in anything above 12 knots - this surely in part to it being shoal draft. I actually broke two rivets that hold the masthead casting and connect the backstay. I don't know if the rivets were original or not, but they were aluminum and clearly not up to the task, something you might want to check on your boat. I would like to hear your impressions on how the boat sails. Cheers, Chris S/V Whisper

Cal 22' rudder

Ron, The individual that sold me my Cal 22' actually purchased a new rudder from Foss Foam - they have a template on file there to make a perfect replacement. You will need to hold onto all the SS fittings that attach to the rudder as these are not supplied. I think he paid ~$600. like 2 years ago (I have the receipt). Best, Chris S/V Whisper

Cal 22 Brochure

Chris, Thanks for the offer. I would love the Cal 22 brochure. My boat has the 3'6" keel. I did not know that there was another keel offered. Is your keel a winged keel? I am interested to learn that it is somewhat tender, but I am not surprised. Yet, from everything that I have heard about the boat, I expect that it will sail quite well. I do not know what that means, exactly, in relation to other boats. However, I plan to race it PHRF to find out. Thanks, too, for the warning about the rivets. I don't know if they are the same on my boat, but I will check them tomorrow. I wish you the best, Matt

Cal 22'

Lear Seigler & C. Raymond Hunt produced a 2'10" modified fin keel as a shoal draft option. It carries something like 200 lbs. of extra ballast in the keel, so the shoal version has bit heavier displacement than the 3'6" model, which I would interpret as another disadvantage in terms of sailing performance. I sail the boat in Barnegat Bay which has many shallow areas and practically none that are deeper than 15'. Email me your address at frisco2527@comcast.net, and I will gladly burn a photocopy of the manual on Monday at work & mail to you. There aren't any pictures or colors, so what you get will bascially be exactly what I have. Cheers, Chris

Rudder

Chris, Do you have a e-mail address or phone for Foss Foam. Are they the same as Fosset? I've e-mailed the latter inquiring if the have or could make a Cal-22 rudder, but no reply as yet. Matt, I have the brochure, will scan and send to you on Monday. Ron

Mastehead rivets

Chris, Thank you for the advice concerning the masthead rivets. I examined my masthead and found that it was just as you had described. I don't know what the strength of the rivets would be. But, I would guess that Cal assumed that the stress was directed downward on the mast and the rivets were only required to maintain that the masthead fitting remain in its appropriate placement. I would tend to agree with them if the rig was a masthead rig with a forestay and a backstay. However, with a fractional rig the only pressure exerted is not balanced and comes from the backstay. So, it would appear--and this is a concern that I need to consider--that the rivets should have been something stronger. Good call, Matt

Rivets

I replaced my sheared aluminum rivets with high-strength, 18-8 stainless rivets, they are 3/16" dia. If my memory serves me correct the mast thickness was .085" and the casting on the masthead was ~.25" at the thru hole, so I sized a 3/8" grip length. Everything fit perfectly (time on the water will tell!). You might also want to include some type of bedding compound as the stainless & aluminum don't get along too well over time. Cheers! Chris

Jiffy reefing outhaul

Was wondering if either of you could explain how you have your outhaul lines rigged for the jiffy reefing? I know the outhaul line runs thru the boom and out the front of the boom over some type of integrated cam, but on my Cal there is no cleat on the mast or on the bottom of the boom to tie off the reefing line. I have a feeling I'm overlooking the obvious here. The owners manual is vague at best on this, but a picture or pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks! Chris

Rivets

Chris, Thanks for the detailed description. Since I am still in the process of cleaning and restoring the boat, I will definitely put this on my "to-do" list. Matt

Sorry, no pic

Chris, couldn't send pic because of Norton Internet Security. Maybe another time, but you can guess the similarity. s/v Whisper
