Who is 'Phil'

Who is this 'Phil' that everyone is talking about. I'd like to complement him on the good job he is doing with these forums. They are very helpful to us new sailors.

Phil herring is the man!

Phil Herring is the man responsible for this site. His avatar is a battleship. He does an outstanding job. Im glad you filled out your profile. That is just one of the many things that Phil has made possible for us to use as another tool to say who we are. Tony B

Leave it where it is

"Ask All Sailors" should be about sailing, not pretty women who want to show some skin and the men who want to be voyeurs. There are plenty of other sites for that and all you need to do is look at the "Sails Calls" forum and there they be.

I didn't even know there was a "Sails Calls" forum until you guys started complaining about where is "Boat Babe". I need to stop reading about boats and see whats around. Jim S/V Java

Wenches and winches

Well I be drinking so much rum that I can mistake the wenches and the winches. Once hurt me privates really bad on a two speed winch i mistook for a lusty lady, but that be another story. Best for me if the two topics be in seperate forums.

Y'all are determined to resurrect that discussion here

despite the fact that Phil moved it the first time. TAKE IT To THE SAILS CALLS FORUM! If you don't, Phil WILL delete it. It wasn't that long ago that most people actually wanted to talk about boats and sailing issues. That the subject is all anyone wants to talk about any more says a lot about the type of people who are buying boats these days.

You are quite right Peggie. No more talk from me

on this subject on this forum. However take time to remind everyone to once in a while check the bowl to base bolts for tight. Used the head this morning and thought I had missed it completely. As it turned out the gasket between the bowl and the base of the head needed a full turn of the screw(s) to take the slack out and seal the interface. All was well following that exercise. Not the sort on thing that impresses your guests.

It seems that if someone has a question about, say, batteries. Someone will chime in and say look it up in the archives. We have already talked about that subject and don't wish to discuss it again. Do your homework, they say. Lets face it ,there's only so many things on a sailboat and I'm pretty sure most all of them, have, at one time or another, been discussed here. I'm for the differing forums and like the way its setup, although I find the cruisers forum somewhat differant. But who am I to complain? The sailors have their threads with stimulating discussions and the bickersons have their thread with some stimulating differences of opinions. It's all here. Use the next button if something offends you. Phil is to be commended for separating the differing of opinions into a orderly system, while maintaining a sailing theme. Leaving those who want to talk about sailing can. There are things I don't wish to take part in, so I just skip it and go to the next thread that interest me. You can't please all the people all the time. And we know all about opinions. I don't think anyone wants to move the babe thread. It's just that when something is differant/changed, for some people they need time to adjust to the difference. Lets face it, we are wanting, what it is we want, and we want it now. The people buying sailboats today, are the same people that were buying them 100 years ago. There's just more of them. Thanks to computers, I now know you exist, and you, me. 25 years ago, I didn't know you existed Keep it up, Ctskip

Read Brian's posts

Phil moved the thread and Brian posted a great set of updates to their trip. Brian's put some effort into sharing his and Boat Babe's experiences; I won't spoil it for you, but as of part 6, they've lost their dinghy. It makes for fun reading. Get over to the new post; stop complaining about the move; and read on about their great adventure. Complete with pictures. Paul

Only so many things on a sailboat??

There are a dozen or more systems that offer a zillion product choices, all of which require maintenance...even more cleaning and maintenance products...sail trim...standing rigging, running rigging, ground tackle options...sea conditions...cruising destinations, laws and CG regs...safety, knots and hitches, weather, proper VHF use, all kinds of electronics, navigation, weather, onboard cooking (provisioning, meals AND equipment to do both)...the iist is endless! That doesn't meam that there's no place for fun here...for "dock talk," But if most questions result in only "search the archives" replies, that can only mean that the people who know the answers would rather talk trash than sailing. Phil has created a forum for you...take it there. If everyone moves there, that only proves that no one here still wants to talk sailing any more...which means there's no reason for this site to exist any longer. I've been reminding people to check everything on their boat regularly to discover what needs maintenance for the whole 10+ years I've been here. Although I've prob'ly said everything I've ever posted at least a dozen times, I still RARELY reply, "check the archives" instead of posting the answers over and over again. Ross, re your comment, "However take time to remind everyone to once in a while check the bowl to base bolts for tight." Where is it written that only I can do that?? There's no reason why you or anyone else can't start a new thread that isn't a question, but an issue you've discovered and want others to know about.
