I have a 1986 Catalina 22 that we keep on the upper part of the Chesapeake Bay. It came with the original outboard (Evinrude 6) that's getting a little tired. I would like to move to a 4 stroke engine (cleaner, no mixing, etc.). I ran across ads for a Briggs & Stratton 5hp outboard. They are at a VERY attractive price. $700+/- brand new. I know they exhaust into the air (vs water) which will make it noisier. Anyone outthere using one (like it? hate it?) Been around one? Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Dale

Last spec's I seen on them, they were not rated for salt water,(for what ever reason). I suspect that they might be on the heavy side, just guessing. If they were so good, I would think you would see them all over the place, and I've not seen one yet on a boat. Save your money and buy a Tohatsu,(they also make Nissan's and Mercury's under 10 HP. Watch Craigslist in your area. I picked up a like new long shaft 5 HP Honda for $600.

Hello Dale,

I have one and would not recommend it. Air cooled is nice but the motor and components seem made for occasional use. Hanging on the back of the boat over the summer cooked the fuel line and made some of the plastic control arms for the choke very brittle.

Salt water will void the warranty. Runs OK at middle and high rpms but I was never able to get it happy at idle.

I ended up with a longshaft 6HP Tohastu and have been _much_ happier.

Regards

I have the same 6HP Extra long shaft Tohatsu (SailPro model) and am glad I got it. I've had zero problems, it's rated for saltwater, and also has an alternator on it. I spent the money for the piece of mind, I've only seen one of those Briggs and Strattons and it was on a small john boat.

Just my two cents...
