Bridgedeck opening...

My new Vega (#1390) has a recess molded into the bridgedeck with a
circular cutout and wooden trim ring... Was this a former compass
installation? Seems like an awkward location at best for a compass
though. Maybe a flat card compass under the glass? The molded recess
does look like something was originally installed there. I searched
the photo gallery for a clue but no luck. Can anyone enlighten me?

I'll try to insert the image or you can see it at

Bill:
My Vega (1331) has the same recess with a glass window and a compass
mounted below. It's a binnacle-type compass, made by Aquameter,
mounted in a short piece of 6" PVC pipe with a cap on the bottom.
Four bolts hold the whole assembly up tight to the inside of the
window.
I'll take a photo tomorrow when I go down to the boat.

Bill:

It is a compass window. I have a Ritchie compass mounted in that
spot. It was there when I bought the boat.

This spot for a compass has always bothered me as it seems to be the
worst spot in the boat for a compass. (Apart from being convenient to
read and protected.) It sits above the most statically magnetic
thing in the boat, the engine, and just behind the most dynamically
magnetic part of the boat (the electrical panel).

I guess this is why you make a compass correction card. -John
