Bridge height dilemma

Hunter 340 Forked River, NJ
The Barnegat Bay region of New Jersey in which we sail has two fixed height bridges that some what limit the northern and southern extent of our sailing grounds. Each bridge is listed on the NOAA chart as having a clearance of 60 feet above MHW. My previous boat was a Hunter 30 with a 50' mast and had no problems with either bridge. My new boat is a Hunter 340 with a mast 56' off the water. This summer we barely made it under the southern-most bridge (over NJ Route 72 to LBI). When we motor/sailed up to the bridge the water height marker showed a clearance range of only 56' at high water to around 58' at MLW (see photo at high tide and 56.5'). We tried to go under the northern-most bridge this weekend (NJ Route 37). This is actually two bridges, an older bascule style opening bridge with a closed clearance of about 30' and a newer fixed span of unknown clearance. On the southern side, the bridge height clearance markers were only provided for the lower span so I called the bridge tender for information. He told me that he did not know the clearance for the fixed span - Can you believe that!!(must be some kind of liability thing). I can't get to the north side of the bridge to see what the clearance is (may be too late) nor does there seem to be any agency that will provide the actual clearance. I would apreciate hearing from any Barnegat Bay NJ sailors who have recently gone under the Route 37 (A.K.A. Mathis) bridge and know the actual clearance and tidal range. Post a response here of contact me via email (I'm in the HOW directory).

maybe there issomething here

a friend of mine sent me this today. i have not had a chance to check out all of it, but your bridge might be there. good luck. i had the same problem going under the i-45 bridge from galveston bay to offatts bayou this past weekend. our bridge tender knew his stuff and we barely made it. http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-o/g-opt/Clearance.htm#64

Bridge clearance

Actual bridge clearances seem to be rather hard to determine. One of the nearby drawbridges in my home area (NJ) was replaced with a higher fixed bridge some years back. Clearance heights were not posted on the new bridge for some time, so I called the Coast Guard to ask if they had the info. They told me it was a drawbridge--not to worry. Seems they were simply referring to the NOAA chart, which hadn't been updated to show the new fixed bridge. The clearance on the new bridge was finally marked later, and is about 55 ft. Looking at the Bridge Clearance Guide link, the CG recommends 65 ft for the NJ ICW, but there's nothing that high from Atlantic City on down to Cape May. In fact, there are at least three fixed bridges with 35 ft clearances (Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Avalon) that mean sailors must go outside from Cape May to A.C. Randy
