The Barnegat Bay region of New Jersey in which we sail has two fixed height bridges that some what limit the northern and southern extent of our sailing grounds. Each bridge is listed on the NOAA chart as having a clearance of 60 feet above MHW. My previous boat was a Hunter 30 with a 50' mast and had no problems with either bridge. My new boat is a Hunter 340 with a mast 56' off the water. This summer we barely made it under the southern-most bridge (over NJ Route 72 to LBI). When we motor/sailed up to the bridge the water height marker showed a clearance range of only 56' at high water to around 58' at MLW (see photo at high tide and 56.5'). We tried to go under the northern-most bridge this weekend (NJ Route 37). This is actually two bridges, an older bascule style opening bridge with a closed clearance of about 30' and a newer fixed span of unknown clearance. On the southern side, the bridge height clearance markers were only provided for the lower span so I called the bridge tender for information. He told me that he did not know the clearance for the fixed span - Can you believe that!!(must be some kind of liability thing). I can't get to the north side of the bridge to see what the clearance is (may be too late) nor does there seem to be any agency that will provide the actual clearance. I would apreciate hearing from any Barnegat Bay NJ sailors who have recently gone under the Route 37 (A.K.A. Mathis) bridge and know the actual clearance and tidal range. Post a response here of contact me via email (I'm in the HOW directory).
