Hello, I'm trying to find a source for replacement parts or someone at Hunter to consult with occasionally to find parts that may not be general aftermarket items, probably specific to original equipment. Do you know anyone that supports owners in this respect? I tried to find help once with a source for replacement diesel fuel tank, but to no avail. Lately my interest is in fixing the leaks from the worn forward hatch. My 1984 Hunter H27 has a forward hatch over the v-berth that has been repaired, caulked, taped, etc. where it has cracked over time. It appears to be tapered smaller as it goes forward rather than being a rectangle or square. I think it may need replacement rather than subject it to anymore repair attempts. Do you have any suggestions for repair or replacement? I've looked thru a couple general boat parts catalogs but haven't found anything close. Is there a double layer to the cabin roof here? It seems to take up more depth than just a single layer of fiberglass. Can I use a hatch of different dimensions here without complications? Is it possible to get any owners manual or original equipment care and maintenance booklets for this model? Any general information on the boat's construction, specifications, sail plans or sail carrying capabilities, dimensions, development history, handicap ratings, etc.? It would be helpful to know what was original equipment so I'll be able to tell what was aftermarket. Don't know if mast and Jiffy reefing boom were orig. equipment. It has a 13hp Westerbeke diesel auxiliary and I have a manual for that. I have also almost continually had the engine stop after running for 30 minutes. With the previous owner, the engine had this problem and was completely disassembled checking things. Don't think this resulted in any improvement. The previous owner also replaced the 2 blade prop w/ a 3 blade. Engine temp seems ok, fuel tank vent is not plugged, filters are clean or replaced, don't know how to tell if the fuel pump is up to par or not: desired fuel pressure rating, flowrate, etc. Don't find one for sale anyway, and westerbeke doesn't respond to e-mail. Added biogard with fresh fuel periodically I've replaced hoses and tightened fuel line fittings. The fuel pump running for 30 seconds is supposed to purge any air from the lines to the injectors. Can't tell if the cutless bearing is binding but it doesn't seem to have any play. Don't know of any marine diesel experts to consult with; and not too keen on just paying for a lot of experimentation by a local inboard/outboard mechanic. Meanwhile we just run the engine going out, sail as much of the time as we can, given enough wind, and motor in to the marina hoping it only conks out before we're trying to hit the slip. Any hints? If support for this model by Hunter Marine is sparse, can you lead me to some one who can help me with parts and /or advice? Do you have any other tips or words of advice for a relatively new Hunter owner? Thanks, Mark Chapman Greenville South Carolina

You are in the right place

Mark, As far as an owners manual here are some links: http://www.planetpadre.com/hunter27_manual.pdf http://www.planetpadre.com/h22_37drawings.pdf Forward Hatch On this site in the photo archives is an excellent set of pictures of replaceing this hatch. Go to the Hunter 27 page for a link or search for it in the photo section. Hope this helps a bit... Chuck S/V Following Sea

replace hatch lense

I have 79 37C. The hatch over my v-berth had leaks and cracks as yours does. But the cost for a new hatch was astronomical. I pulled the lens out, and took it to a local plastic supply house and the cut a replacement (almost - I had to round the corners and my hatch lens was actually screwed down - I had to drill). For less than 50 bucks I have a great hatch with no leaks. I also replaced the gasket.

Bomar 2092 from pompanette.com

is under 500 dollars. (only 5 small boat units!) That's what I did. Check under models for the hatch replacement story. It has pictures and descriptions. The archives tell a number of variations (including mine). (Learning how to search it will answer most of your questions.) The most interesting is just putting a square hatch over the trapeziodal hole. I guess the idea was that the square hatch was cheaper, or more available. Sorry, I've got the Yanmar one-lunger. But if I got to your point, I'd be hunting pretty hard for a real marine diesel mechanic, even if I had to induce him to make a long distance trip! One thought is that all diesels are very susceptible to air in the fuel. A hairline crack stopped me cold until we replaced the pipe. Another idea is that you may have an exhaust constriction that finally chokes off the engine. Search for "mixing elbows" for more on that idea. Maybe someone else will have an answer for you. engine problem

Mark it may be your fuel pickup screen getting clogged after you run awhile. You might try getting a small 3 gal. portable fuel tank and hookup to the engine and run off it to see if this corrects the problem before you invest the money for a tank cleaning.
