My answer is 45. But there might be 2 schools of thought here.

  1. Adding the sum of the previous equation results in the next value to be added to the next equation. 1+4=5 +2+5=12 and so on resulting in an answer of 34 for the last equation.
  2. Assuming there is a pattern involved one must add the next logical equation 4+7+ the value of the previous equation 21 nets 32, then continue with the next equation to result in 45.
So which is correct?

Several may be correct, several may be incorrect. Multi valued function.
This was fun, ......for awhile. :(

1 + 4 = 5, but so does 1 x (4+1) = 5; go from there. 2 x (5 + 1) =12; 3 x (6 +1) = 21; and 5 x (8 +1) = 45

In this pattern, the "missing" 4 + 7 should equal 4 x (7 + 1) = 32.

These "games" I put on here are for the fun of it. Don't always have the answers nor do I look them up. It is fun. Better than Geritol. LOL

Column series...
Column 1 is a classic series...
Fibonacci Series

1,2,3,5,8,13.... or for you Gamblers the "Optimum Betting Strategy"

Column 2 adds a series of number which is 2,3,4,5,6....
4 + [2] yields 6
5 + [3] yields 8
6 + [4] yields 10
8 + [5] yields 13.
10 +[6] yields 16

Column 3 is a bit more complicated...
You are adding a ODD number series to the column which is 7,9,11,13
5 +[7] is next number of
12+[9] is next number of
21 +[11] is next of
32 + [13] is next number of
45 + [15] ...

Give my prize to @Kermit ...
Jim...

Yeah, but to apply your series column "3" one has to run through the whole enchilada to get a distant unknown. Nicht so?

For example, 213 + 216 = ? (Good luck!!) Whereas, with the "formula" of post #24: 213 x (216 +1) = 46,221.

I like 111. It is the only answer that is not a pointless exercise in obfuscation. The second equation suggested it to me. But still silly.

1 + 4 = 5
2 + 5 = 12
3 + 6 = 21
5 + 8 = ?
you multiply the two numbers then add the first number to the result...

1 x 4 = 4 4 + 1 + 5
2 x 5 = 10 10 + 2 = 12
3 x 6 = 18 18 + 3 = 21
5 x 8 = 40 40 + 5 = 45
