We just purchased a 2007 Hunter 49. The bow thruster stopped working. I can not find the breaking or fuse. Can anyone give me a clue what I am looking for and where to find it?

I have a Hunter 45CC - the fuse is near the house battery bank.
There is also a fuse in the main cabin under the port settee. Best. V

If its anything like the one on the 41DS it will be undersized and almost completely ineffective against any kind of cross wind or current, at least that is the case for ours. This has challenged me to learn how to manage without, so far so good.

What could be the other cause? Popping in the new fuse and having it blow is a 50 dallors test. I sure would like to trouble shot all problems 1st

Had 3 problems with my Thruster over 12 years:

1. Control module at the helm got wet internally and failed. Easily replaced with replacement from Defender.

2 Motor brushes got stuck in their holders. Motor ran but was weak. This was a known issue. Took motor to an electrical motor repair shop and they shaved the brushes down a bit.

3 The main fuse at the output of the battery blew for no apparent reason. Was replaced a few years ago and has been fine ever since.

I'm sure you checked the thruster battery assuming it has a dedicated battery.

Fuse was 42 dollars. I am in Key west making repairs.

Battery ok.

Works with the new fuse. But beeps like it is going to overheat in 2 or 3 seconds.
I will check the motor in Clearwater this weekend.
I did get in the water and for something in the thruster. Looked ok.

Nick,
That could very well be the motor brush issue I discussed previously. If nothing else is apparent, it is relatively easy to remove the motor and bring it to a shop for inspection.

Okay so after I replace the fuse the guy thrusters work. But after just a couple seconds it beeps like it's getting hot. So I let off. I'm going to pull the motor and take it and have it looked at I think that's what the issue is that cause the fuse to blow. Thanks everybody for your advice. I'll let you know what happens

Nick please let us know I just took the motor off mine today I have a similar issue after a very short time of use especially to the port side it stalls out from what I believe is heat in the motor.

As I recall there was a thread 5 or 6 years back discussing how long one could continually run the thruster before hitting a thermal overload limit. I think the consensus was in the neighborhood of 30 seconds. (. Continuously not pulsing). Someone mentioned seeing lots of black carbon dust in the area around the motor and that is what led to the discussion of stuck brushes in the holders. The motor shop I took mine to confirmed that the brushes were binding and shaved them down as there was still plenty of the brushes still left. I recall the total charge was to do this was around $100. I use my thruster each time I leave or depart my slip, pulsing as necessary. I still have the original brushes i.e. 2005 but am thinking its time to replace them as a Preventive maintenance activity.

Ok, think you're looking in the wrong area.
My guess is that it is the solenoid relay, and these are my reasons why:
The relay is hot switched, and the contacts get pitted and wear out over time.
Now, on a motor, the only thing likely to wear are the brushes, but the relay gets more abuse
If the relay contacts are pitted, they will have high resistance. So, the thruster may start to run, but then the contacts heat up, causing loss of drive current.
So, there are ways to test this theory.
Firstly, locate the thruster relay, and smell it. Do this very intensely. If it's pitted, you'll likely know.
Second, you can get bypass the relay with heavy duty jumper cables, or custom made wire jumpers (heavy guage!!!)
Try all this, and see what happens

The thruster is like a windlass, so the fuse near the battery should be sized for the wire to the thruster. The other "fuse" should be a breaker rated for the thruster motor spec- say 70 amps or whatever.
