I am considering adding the catalina bow sprit to my std rig Catalina 30 so that I can get improved weather helm amd to ba able to add an anchor roller. Does anyone know of a "how to" article? More specifically, How much needs to be added to the forestay to accomplish this? I have a Harken roller furling setup and was wondering if I can just add a fitting to extend the forestay? Thank in advance for your help.

bow sprit

the bow sprit onley came with the Tall rig option and the mast is 2' taller so unless some one made the conversion with the same boat and same mast rake It would be hard for us to help with for stay size. catalina has a drawing of the parts you need to make.but I think you would also need acoustom head sail.I think my bow sprit is 30" I made anew one out of teak .catalina might have a kit you can buy but it will cost alout of bucks. So I made mine the teak was 2" thick and I bought it from aguy in mexico his wife took the orderin bad broken english it cost 70 bucks plus shipping .I think the headstay also gets thicker mine has 3/8 SS and a larger fuiler to fit over the turn buckel. Catalina Direct has a "kit" to add the bowsprint. See link.

rigging the bowsprit.

I would reconsider extending the forestay out to the bowsprit. The sail will not fit right. There are other ways to reduce or increase weather helm. I think the bowsprit would be very cool, however, if one wanted to install a furling gennaker (code zero or any lightweight reaching sail) using one of those flexible furling systems. Look at some of those offshore single handed rigs for ideas.

Bowsprit?

Hi; This may or may not help, but I had to do the opposite to my 1996 C30 Tall rig. To fit into my slip at our marina, I had to remove the bowsprit and shorten the head stay 4.72" to attach it to a standard rig stem fitting. Catalina said I was not breaking new ground as they have made a few C30's with tall rig, but no bowsprit. Boat sails just fine, but I did have the 155% genoa cut slightly higher to clear the lifelines and bow pulpit when reaching. I would assume you would have to increase the length of the head stay with an additional fitting approx. 4.72 inches. Fair winds Dave
