Bow Roller and Windlass

I'd like to mount an bow roller and manual windlass on our Vega, Bella (#2620). Does anyone
have plans or photos they can send showing how to accomplish this? The problems I see
right off the bat are that the water fill is just aft of the forestay, a chain pipe would need to
be installed routing the rode into the chain locker (which is forward of the V berth), the
system needs to be sealed to keep water out of the V berth. I'm thinking that I'm going to
need to move the water tank fill to another location to make all this happen. Any ideas?

Thanks

I have a couple of photos of my setup at ftp://83.104.41.125/

I made the roller myself from SS plate, and it lets me retain the original
water filler. It's lasted five seasons now without a problem.

I fitted the anchorman windlass more than 20 years ago, and it uses the
original hawse pipe. The only problem with this method is that chain has to
be fed through the pipe from above, or pulled from below, neither of which
is a nuisance.

Its beginning to look like I'm going to have to design a bow roller myself and have it made.
Not a huge problem. I'll probably mount the windlass just aft of the forward cleat and put
a pipe leading forward to the anchor locker. I'll just have to come up with a way to keep it
dry in the V-berth.

Thanks for the photos. They help with some ideas.

I know Steve Birch used to manufacture/sell bow rollers, they were too fancy (and expensive) for my taste, but it may be what you require; I'm surprised he's not tried to sell you one already!

Hi Bob

My bow rollers sell themselves, no need to advertise!!! None in stock at the moment. If you want the plans to make your own then let me know and think you will find teh price of stainless, ploishing and welding aint cheap - even "Up t'north"!

Steve,
If you don't mind sharing the plans, I'd love to have them. I have access to a machine
shop and can generally get material pretty reasonably. I'll have to do the work myself, but
there is not usually a shortage of time over the winter. If you'd prefer not to share the
plans, just let me know how much they are and put me on the list for a set.

If you want, let me know about how many you normally go through, and perhaps I can
make a years worth in one run. It might even be cheaper than building them yourself.

You may want to take a look at my 4 photos under Sula 1733. Taken in
the dark I'm afraid! The roller is a Plastimo part number 39386 which
stows the anchor neatly and securely - no more lifting the anchor on a
pitching foredeck! Between the water filler and cleat is a mushroom
vent, new chain hood to the port side of the cleat (which BTW replaces
the original cleat that broke off in strong wind). Neat and works very
well, any questions just ask!

Alisdair,
I'd like to see your set up, but I can't open your photos- is there another address to use?
Thank you,
Patrick

I'm a little late with this reply, but here are some shots of mine,
first of 4 pictures:

I don't have a windlass yet, but maybe you can get an idea of the
roller setup. It's a Windline BRM-4 and the anchor is a 10 kg (22 lb)
Bruce. Works like a charm :)

Hope this helps,
Peter
