Contact any reputable marine dealership

of any make boat in your area and inquire about the installation of a bow thruster. They must do it for the boats they sell and may be of help to direct you to a reputable installer.

Thanks for nothing Chet

Chet, while you may understand english better than Dear Hunter, it's apparent your manners and your understanding of the use of capital letters needs refinement. Stop yelling and stop being an ugly american.

I second that , Mark.....

..it would not have been so bad if the letters were not in bold. I have been sailing for 15 years and I am sad to say that I forget my terminology all the time...but I don't need someone who probably may not even have a high school education make me feel like I an idiot. on behalf of most of the sailors, beg your forgiveness Dear Hunter... abe

Hi Ken, That was what we worried about, have you tried to install one, or where do you have your experience from?

Additional bow thruster info..

I do know there is a manufacturer that produces a low profile retractable thruster that is extended below the hull when in use and retracts into a small space went idle. I'll try and find more..........

Dear Hunter,

I owned a 1998 410 for eight years. It did not have a bow thruster. One of the problems with installing a thruster on these boats is that the bow does not extend deep enough below the waterline for a conventional thruster. Additionally, with the forward head situated where it is, there is no good placement for the thruster's mechanisms. The Hunter 410 is a highly maneuverable boat, one that will rarely require a thruster once the skipper is experienced in docking procedures. The only problem with a 410 is that it becomes different to dock the boat in windy conditions because of the high freeboard. The secret in such conditions is to keep at least 2 knots of speed on going into the dock, and then reversing the engine once you've lined up the approach. Make certain that you pause in neutral for a few seconds between forward and reverse in order to allow the transmission to stop spinning. Give yourself a dozen chances to come into the dock with a bit more speed, and you will probably find that a bow thruster is no longer something to be desired. It is nice to have someone from Faaborg contributing to this site. Welcome to our community.

side shift

Thanks for your help, we will have a look into it, it looks like it does not take much space this one. Do you know the one I have attached a link for? very special! but then we do not have to use a cabinet and a drawer under the bed to get it to fit. as our boat builder has suggested.

John, Reg: Faaborg, Denmark

Hello to all of you, You are probably right, we have to get use to the boat, we have only been sailing for about 3 weeks, got our hunter in the end of summer, and now it is on land for the winter. Our problem is that we are living in south of Funen in Denmark, one of the most beautiful areas in Denmark, you can check it out on google earth: Faaborg, Denmark, and you will se all our beautiful small islands between Faaborg, Svendborg and Aeroe, all the islands have very small harbours, so there are not much space to get around. In Denmark – it is ALWAYS windy, great when you have a great sail boat out on the sea, but not that much fun to get into the small harbours ;). There for we would like to find a bow thrust (which do not take up to much space in the boat) to help us out.

worst parasitic drag possible

Those sideshifter thrusters will ruin your boat's sailing abilities. It's just about the worst option out there, something akin to putting training wheels on a motorcycle, a far worse option than installing a conventional bow thruster. Really, hire an instructor to teach you how to dock that boat in the wind. I've docked a 410 in winds exceeding 20 knots literally hundreds of times, and if you know what you're doing you don't need a bow thruster.

I have to......

...go along with john on that one. External non-retractable thruster will have an ENORMOUS amount of drag on it. Bad enough to have a permanently mounted one in your hull. The best possible alternative is the retractable thruster that is out of the water flow when not in use.
