Bow Hook

I have a O'Day 19 that I just purchased this season and that I have come to have great affection for. Last weekend, while docking my boat, I bumped up against the dock with the bow. I didn't think it was a very hard bump but apparently it was hard enough. The D ring on the bow, to which you hook your trailor winch to trailer the boat, broke off just into the threads leaving nothing but a 3/8" hole in the bow. (I know this probably has a name but I am too new of a sailor to know it) Has anyone had any experience with fixing this? I am going to try to remove the rest of it by using one of those Craftsman bits made to unsrew stripped screws but I am skeptical as to the chances for success. Any suggestions or stories of similar experiences and the resulting solutions would be gratfully welcome. Thanks in advance.Jboucher

On my O20 the bolts go through the into the wall above the berth but I don't know if you will have the access on the o19

On my O'day daysailer II, I acquired it without a boweye. The hole had been epoxied over. I had to tunnel through some foam ahead of the bulkhead to attach a nut to the rear of the new boweye. I put an inspection port in to finish off the hole and tunnel.

Bow Eye is usually U-bolt

Most bow eyes are a U-bolt with a backing plate, washers and nuts on the inside of the boat. On my 192 there is a little wooden panel in the bow that hides everything up there, perhaps your 19 is similar?Trying to remove what's still in the hole out the front is probably a waste of time. You'll need to get access from inside the boat to replace it anyway. If you did get it out and couldn't replace it, the open hole would make for a significant leak.

Bow Eye

Thanks for the advice. You were all correct. After further investigation I have discovered that it would be a waste of time to try to get the bolt out of the front. I will have to cut a hole in the bulkhead to gain access and be able to install a new bow eye and then cover it with an inspection panel. I don't much like having to alter the original appearance of this bulkhead but there is clearly no other choice. Thanks again for your replies.jboucher
