I have a "new" 1975 Pearson 28-1 and have been rebedding all the deck hardware. Looking at the bow cleat, I don't see any interior access to the bolts/backing. Does anyone know how that cleat is installed? Is it backed by a tapped backing plate of some kind and I can just unscrew from the deck?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Scottr, You should look in two places: 1.) if you have an anchor well, see if there is a deck inspection plate mounted in the fore end of the well or 2.) check in your v-berth and look for an inspection door/panel near the bow. If not, I would suggest cutting an inspection port/door since your bow cleat is a very important structural member. Many Pearsons used 1/4" backing plates of fiberglass on their cleats and stanchions. I would recommend buying stainless steel or aluminum backing plates (1/8" is fine) and replace your bolts, washers and lock nuts for a clean installation. Use plenty of bedding material and before installing, check to see if there is any rot or delamination in the core material. Good luck and good sailing, Ron

Thanks for the tip. I've checked it out and there is no access to the back of the cleat. Looks like it's time to make one.
