I am looking at a 1978 Hunter 27 to buy. The boat seems in pretty good shape, but I have one question. The anchor locker is forward of the V-Berth, however I did not see a hawsepipe or other means of getting the rode into the locker from on deck. Am I missing something or is this something that I'll have to add. Thanks in advance. Dave

H27 anchor locker.

Where are Dave L. and Andy and the other H27 gurus? Are you asking about the anchor locker cover? That there is no way in except to open that cover? I think that is the case. Unlike my H37C which has a slot on each corner of the front of the locker for the chain to exit. But I guess the H27 came without a bow roller for the anchor. So everything was kept in the locker and put back in the locker after use. If you were to add a roller and keep an anchor on the bow then it would be an easy modification to that cover. Check the pictures in the Related Link to see how some owners use their anchors.

Thanks Ed

No, the 27 I am looking at had no cover on deck at the bow. The owner uses a stern anchor and keeps the rode in a small lazarette aft of the traveler. I was just curious as to where the rode was stored for the bow anchor. There is storage just forward of the V-Berth that I assumed was an anchor locker, but no access from on deck. Thanks again for any and all comments. Also anything else I might should be looking for. Dave

Forward portion of the hatch...

The deck is beveled at the forward portion of the hatch. Plenty of space for chain or rode to slide through (at least that's how my 1980 27 is set up). Manny

The 1980 Cherubini 27 that we have has an anchor/chain&rode locker on the fore deck and as Manny mentioned there is plently of room for both chain & rode to exit the locker with the cover down, the locker is equipped with a scupper to allow drainage. The PO installed a bow roller so I leave the anchor on the roller with a retaining pin in the chain. It's a simple matter of pulling the pin and the anchor slides off along with the chain and rode. I then let the rode out to the desire depth and then cleat it off on the foredeck cleat.

I think some of the 70's models had no anchor locker.

The best thing would be to install a bow roller to hang the anchor and cut an opening for a deck pipe to store the rode down below.

Thanks

Thanks for the input. Yes it's a pretty easy fix to install a hawsepipe and make sure there is a drain in the forward locker. Mostly I was just curious. Thanks again for all the information. Dave

No locker on our '77 h27

Lady Lillie has no anchor locker. The space is a cupboard at the forward end of the v-berth. I suppose it could be converted to an anchor locker, with glass work to protect (but still give access to) the bow lights, seal the door to the v-berth, put a floor on the locker, and then cut an opening in the deck, and make a door for the top, and a drain for the locker. Both our anchors and their rodes are in anchor bags, and stowed in the lazarette on the starboard side. I carry them forward and secure the bag on the bow before anchoring - sometimes before we set out, other times as we enter the anchorage. I tie the bitter end to the mast, then pass the anchor through the bow pulpit, and back on the the bow. Then I flake out the planned scope, and it is ready to go. When lugging the anchor forward becomes tedious, I will mount an anchor forward, and just carry the rode up to be ready to anchor. I haven't got a good, reliable quick attachment design yet to connect the rode to the anchor. Oh, yeah, our rode is line with 15 feet of chain. David Lady Lillie

Easy job

I have an early 27. 1975. The boat had no hawserpipe to give access to the rope locker foweard of the V berth. I added one. I have the anchor hung on a bracket forward of the pulpit. Works fine. The bottom of the locker was not sealed, so, any water found its way to the bilge. The cap on the pipe is a block of mahogany. Nice Sat project.

Thanks again

Thanks again eveybody for the input. I think I'm gonna make an offer on the boat so I'll just decide about the anchor locker if and when the time comes. Dave
