Well, it wasn't exactly what i was aiming for, but it was so cheap I figured i had nothing to lose. And even if it's not salvageable I can get some experience.

It's a 1991 Achilles RIB. It has 3 chambers. the port and bow hold air. The starboard tube had a big, huge, long patch on it. The guy didn't do a good job. he used a piece of roofing material (come to find out, the roofing stuff is hypalon too), and who knows what for glue. I peeled it off and there are no rips underneath, but it is worn down to the fabric.

So a couple trips to West Marine, and now i have a quart of Liquid Rubber. The website says it can be used to "reskin" a 10' inflatable. I dont know if the can actually has enough for the whole dink (and mine has a hard bottom, so dont need to do the bottom), but maybe 2 tubes. it says it should be applied 4-5mils thick. it takes 48 hours to cure to touch, and 7 days to fully cure. it is self leveling. can be applied by brush, roller, or spray. it has the consistency of cold honey. supposedly your inflatable will look new after doing the whole thing. It is specifically for worn spots. if the rubber isnt worn, you need to abrade it first.

I had a time getting his black "glue" off. looked like roof tar. dude must have been a roofer. I basically had to scratch it off with my fingernails a little at a time.

So, I got a dinghy (no motor) for $100! if it works for a season or two great. if not, I had fun working on it. I think it will work though.

I would take it to a certifiied Achilles dealer and let them do some maintenance on it. My RIB is a Caribe and has been out in the sun since 1994. It has also started to fail, but it can hold air for a few days at a time. I got a price of $1400 for a new skin

Re-skin it if you cannot fix it! It is still a lot cheaper than a new RIB.

SWEET!!!!! Wish I had it! Great find. Patch and put it on ebay when you tire of it. I'll be a bidder!

Wow! what a good week for deals! I just drove to Myrtle Beach this evening and picked up a used 8hp Nissan for $350. And "used" is not the right word to describe it. It is brand-new looking. not a scratch on it. The dark blue paint shines like it just came of the showroom floor. there is not a trace of oil or gas or residue under the cover. all the rubber looks factory fresh. even the gas can looks brand new. im not exactly sure of the year, but it is a NS8B 3B2-1. Im guessing a late 90's model. it is MINT.

The guy said it belonged to his father-in-law up in Michigan, and he never used it except to test it a couple times. it was on his dinghy on the back of his big boat, and he never had use for the dinghy! he wanted $900 for the dinghy, trailer, outboard, tank, and motor stand.

I kinda pulled a trick and drove an hour and a half to meet him and then asked to buy the outboard only. he said his FIL wouldnt take less than $550, and i got him on the phone and talked him down. No title, dont know what year, and no way to test run it in the parking lot. He said ok! and included the stand, tank and brand new tiller extension.

I stopped at walmart on the way home and bought some twc3 and then some gas, and as soon as I got home I fired her up! 2nd pull. 1 pull choke, next pull fired up. it sounds so good. Now I am fully outfitted! my 2 year project is done, and i have a dinghy and motor!!!

NOW FOR SOME FUUUUNNNNN!!!!!!

What, no picture of the starboard side?
ha! yeah i was hiding the bad side.

actually it was against the wall and i was lazy. and it was deflated at the moment, so i was trying to keep it out of the pic. i was skinning that side.
there was a pretty large section that needed reskinning on the stbd side. it looks like its holding air now!
