I've Switched From Micron CSC..

To Pettit Ultima SR. I had good luck with the Micron in terms of even wear and no build up but the color of the paint around the water line took on a funny color. The Pettit Ultima SR is very, very good paint and I had zero growth at the end of the season with a very even wear and no build up. This stuff is darn expensive ($179.00 gal) but well worth it in my book seeing as my last bottom job cost 3K and with a new boat I wanted to start fresh no hard paint for me ever!

For Doug...

Look in my boatyard and you'll see I have a white rudder on my H28.5.... Not sure if the white helps for not. Sort of like crumpling up the front page of the paper and throwing it over your left shoulder to keep sabre tooth tigers at bay....whatever works works.

great paint, keeps the bottom very clean, wears evenly-and can last for several years.

Bottom Paint Forver

In eight years my newport 30 has been out of the water twice. Each time I probably could have skipped repainting altogether. After the slime and short crud was pressure washed she looked good. BTW, in 1974 they knew how to build hulls that didn't blister or delaminate. I credit Capital Yachts and Trinidad, expensive as it might be. Conditions in Chesapeake Bay obviously differ from place to place.

VC 17

I purchased a boat with VC 17 on it I was told all I have to do is wash the bottom at haul out, which I did and roll on a new coat before launch. How many coats do you put on? Is there a place to purchase VC 17 at a deal price? What type roller do you use? Do I do it evey year or can it go more than one season? Thanks for your help.

VC-17

We use VC-17 on a yearly basis. The bottom remains very smooth and is easily re-appllied each year. We simply clean the bottom and apply a new coat of paint with paint rollers. Our H28 needs three quarts each season for full coverage. One season we thought the paint looked good as the color was not worn off but learned the hard way that it needs to be applied each season as we experienced heavy growth that year! The paint is a bit expensive but is worth the cost with the ease of application.

Ultima SR

I have been using the ablative paint on my boat for the last 23 years. I started with the TBT paints until it was outlawed (boo), then went something called Goldstar (I think), and then the Ultima SR. Super paint! It is very easy to clean and protects like nothing else in this area. For a racing sailer, if you clean you boat for every race as you should, you will have do do very little sanding on your next haulout. This is my fifth season on the paint. The past two years in the spring and once in the summer, I had a diver clean the bottom. He said it cleaned as easily as a fresh bottom, had no barnacles, and should be good for the rest of the year. What more can you ask? I'll be hauling it this spring and I already have my Ultima SR ready! One more fact. If you trailer your boat, but do leave it in the water for long periods of time, the ablative paint does not loose it's antifouling properties like hard paint does if left our of the water for more than a week,. Ameron ablative

What is Ameron bottom paint you say. Well it's every bit as good as Pettit or other brands and half the price about $65. per gallon. The problem was it was sold only in 55 gal drums. Now they sell it in quarts. Way Kewl. We would get a bunch of guys to buy the paint in the big drums and then we would have a gang paint. One of the guys here turned us on to it. He said the Navy base here was using it. Fair Winds Cap'n Dave

Ultima SR as multi-season USAC + tropical

I selected Ultima SR because as the only high copper ablative available when I went around the Atlantic to Africa and back via Carib in 1999-2000. Great success, with the proviso that the waterline can foul on the sunny side if left idle at dock for a month or two, but that is easily brushed. After a year in warm waters, I hosed and recoated with same, and am now in my 4th season with only one recoat on one or two bare spots and a one-foot strip at the waterline every year. Expensive, but worth every penny, since full scale application is time-consuming, and one can does the annual touch up on my Allied Seawind II 32' ketch. In tidal area, you can do it between tides if leaning against a pier. On the propeller, I spray Pettit no.1793, the only thing that worked on barnacles in the Western LI Sound.

I agree with Pete

I use Interlux Fiberglass Bottomkote ACT Ablative. One gal on the 30 ft Catalina in fresh water. End of season rquires pressure wash and the bottom now looks like it doesnt even need another coat. i spread it thin and make sure the waterline area is well covered. cleans up nice. No sanding, and it is easy. John
