When the Capri 22's left the factory was the bottom a grey gel coat?
I am sanding my bottom and I think its just a grey gel coat and the Po did not do a barrier coat because he was only in and out of fresh water several times a year.
I am going to be in salt water and would have to do a barrier coat first.
I see grey coming through as I sand soo i just want to be sure.

I don't think so. My guess is someone hit it with a barrier coat or did the gray to tell them when it's time to repaint. I've got brownish VC17m under my blue VC17m so I know when a new coat is due.

Nope brandy new off the line it had the same color gelcoat below the waterline as above. Gray indicates a barrier coat, perhaps Interprotect 2000e.

If you are sanding down to it though you might cut through it as well.. you'll need to rebarrier in those places. My recent experience with that was having to sand all the way through the barrier coat, and have to re-apply. If I ever had to do it again, I'd pay to have it soda blasted.

Once the bottom is sanded/faired though applying barrier coat isn't all that bad.
Sanded/faired

Barrier applied

VC17m applied

Never again, bottom job and topsides in the same winter

Nice pic's, Thats what I thought, its a barrier coat.I have done a few bottom jobs including a compleat strip and rebarrier on a c 30,not a fun job.
I am lightly sanding just to feather out old bottom paint then I'll re coat and get this baby in the water, fianally.

30 footer? you're way more ambitious than me! I'd not want to ever do it again, but I'll admit, that was last winter, and it was much warmer than this one... it kept me busy, and out of trouble...

I've not had 2 seconds to spare this winter, and when I have, it's been too flippin cold.

Good luck and post some picts!
