Hi all,
I hope this sailing season has been an enjoyable one for all my fellow sailors?
Thinking a bit ahead......My Club's bottom paint bulk supplier will no longer be carrying Micron paints. We still don't know what he will be stocking. I have been using Micron CSC Extra for many years with excellent results. My Cat30 sails the waters of the NY Bite and Jamaica Bay. So, it's 100% salt water. I'm looking for experiences with other ablatives for my conditions. Thanks in advance for your help and continue with Happy Sailing.

Suggest asking your bottom cleaning diver or local boatyard.
Thank you but, in my Club, we do our own work, no outside "professionals". The surrounding Clubs, (mostly fishing boats) are "in the same boat". This is why I'm asking the variety of sailors on this site, since most don't sell anything.

OP was asking for an ablative paint recommendation. Just ask bottom cleaning diver (that is what I do) or local boatyard for a paint recommendation, buy the paint from your favorite suppler AND apply it yourself.

Hi,

I sail the Long Island sound, probably similar water as you. I have been using Pettit pains for 10 years or so. I used to use Ultima SR (40 or 60), which has been discontinued. I am now using Pettit Odyssey, which has worked great so far this year.

Two coats of Micron would last me 2 seasons. I haul the boat out every other year with little or no growth on the hull.

At my Club we do not use a bottom cleaning diver. We dive on our own boats. So, there's no one to ask, before we decide which paint to use. I have been using CSC because it works for me. Now, unless I'm willing to pay full price, I must look for a paint our supplier can get for us.

So you know the paint you want and supplier cannot supply, then change suppliers or shop for lowest price on the internet. That is what I do.

I'm on year 4. only the waterline needs a new coat where too much scrubbing of slime has worn it off.
Year round use. Florida in the winter with some very 'active' water. summer up to the Chesapeake. 2 coats bottom, extra 2 coats waterline and elsewhere. Virtually all slime, some barnacles will attach to the slime and pop off easy. Every diver, and I use different ones as I travel, is impressed. Crazy expensive, about $175 per gallon. A bit tricky to find as it is sold primarily to the commercial market. Some sources will only sell 5 gallon pails. If you try a PPG store, they will have no idea or want $400/gallon.

sand well and paint. but give it a full 24 hours or more before launch, the slings can damage if the travel lift guy isn't gentle. Use of shrink wrap on the straps is very good.

Hi again,

i also get two years from Pettit paint. First year the boat stays in the water. After year two it gets hauled for the winter, then sanded and painted in the spring. With SR40 I could go 1 month before a gentle scrub during the first year and then twice a month in year two. With the odyssey I have cleaned the bottom twice this year. We will see how next year goes.

There are certainly hull cleaners in your neck of the woods, whether you use them or not. Why not spend thirty seconds on Google and find one or three to ask?

Thank you for the suggestion. I would rather ask the opinion of boat owners than ask someone in the business of painting boats. The priorities are not the same.

Hull cleaners are not in the business of painting boats, they are in the business of cleaning hulls by diving down and scraping them. I suppose an unethical hull cleaner would recommend the worst bottom paint so there would be more work. I don't think most of them are that dishonest.

Hull divers are not "in the business of painting boats." And the hull diver's priority is to provide his client with good service and good information. But by all means, ignore the expert opinion of those who do this for a living.

Only an idiot wants his job to be made more difficult than it has to be. Nobody ever became successful by recommending lousy products to his customers. And no boat owner of the many thousands I have come across in my 28 years in this business has ever increased his hull cleaning frequency because he chose to use an inferior anti fouling paint.

I don't think most of them are that dishonest.
Inferring that most of them are to some degree dishonest?

Not at all. Simply another risk to consider and it's just as easy to ask in this forum.

I wouldn’t ask our house cleaner what paint to use on the wall, what flooring to choose or what roofing material best protects the house.
