Though I have a 1987 O'Day 192, this question probably applies to any boat. I have the light blue ablative paint that was applied before I became owner. A light gray layer is showing through that I assume is maybe a barrier layer. I'm not sure though. I had contemplated using the Star 10 stripper but not sure if that would also remove the 'barrier' coat. The sales person at West Marine recommended a paint that he said would require the boat to be put in the water not later than 16 hours after application. My question then is: (1)Is it probable that the gray is a barrier coat? Is there an O'Day owner out there that can give me a better idea as to whether the gray paint layer is a barrier layer? (2)Would the Star 10 or other paint removers take off both the barrier coat and the ablative coat? (3)Are there other paints that can be applied and can be left out of the water for a longer period than 16 hours? (4)Would it be better to just sand instead of using a stripper? Thanks, Bill

Bottom paint thoughts

The gray layer is probably the barrier coat as you suspect. Interlux 2000 is grey and is generally used as a barrier coat. There are several multi-season ablative paints that don't require the boat to be launched in 16 hours. Micron CSC or the West Marine PCA are two good examples. They are more expensive though.

It has been my experience that paint remover does not remove barrier coat. Try it in a small section to make sure.

Why?

Why don't you paint over what's there? You can re-coat ablative since it works by wearing off anyway.

Just give it a light sanding

and paint over it! Don't take the bottom down!

thanks

OK, thanks everybody. I need to get it done as soon as the weather sweetens up. Temp still in the lower 20's at night and had a skiff of snow last night. I'm sure summer is on the way !!! Bill
