Bottom Painting .........................

We switched to Eco to try it from Ultima sr40 this year. Pettit says that it works well over many ablatives, including SR40. Went on very well, bottom stayed clean, free of growth and slime. A little grass on the bow after she sat for the month of september, but it came right off. Much better than typical year and the water was really warm in Portland this year.so far so good. just a little touch up and she's ready to launch in the spring.

I've been reading up on this too. you have saleman pitching it and a few biting it. some say it works mad others have said it did not work on their boat. the paint industry would lose a lot of money if it truely works. there are threads on other forums that talk about it

Practical Sailor didn't really give it a good review. They said the thing was kind of noisy, vibrating resonances on the hull or some such. As I understand, the small vibrations are what keep growth off, so it makes no sense to me physically how anything can vibrate, and remain silent. And, it would have to be on 24/7 to be effective. In my experience, once under growth starts, it's katy-bar-the-door from then on.
Now as negative as all that sounded, I too would LOVE to see it work. It would negate the haul-out issue altogether for the exception of thru hull, and prop maintenance, maybe a short haul on occasion for inspection.
It sure would put a kink on bottom paint manufacturers, as it's a sure sell every year or two. But like others, I'm sure tired of the debate about the paint in the water. And it would shut up the state of california for a short bit as well..

I have sailed for over 30 years with cruising boats in NE, so you can imagine how much bottom paint I've purchased over the years. I simply abhor paying $225 +/- for paint with a boat that probably needs 2 gallons for one coat. Guy next to me has a 45 ft fast trawler and he has never painted the bottom since buying the boat new 6 years ago. He runs fast and often, then does a short haul mid summer to power wash. The only fouling he has is on his stabilizer surfaces. Last year I bought 1 gallon of Petit epoxy based stuff and thinned it 100% to make two gallons, then applied with a roller. A bit thin for roller but it went on, stayed on and when hauled didn't look any different than when I've used two gallons. This year I am thinking about just putting her in and having a local diver come twice in the season. He gets around $100 for a clean and I'd rather see the money go in his pocket than WM, Defender, and Petit.
Just a quicky ..... Is petit 120 thinner the same as zylol? one is $30.00 a can and the other is like $4.00 a can.
