I just refinished my Iron keel as discussed in a previous post. Im planning on putting a coat
of Ablative paint on the keel to finish it up and cover the epoxy on it (see previuous post entitled keel repairs) While im at it I thought I might paint the entire bottom as well Im using all ablative paint. Can anyone find fault with or comment on this Idea even though its off season

Most ablatives don't survive drying out for extended periods before losing their efficacy. I infer you being in Massachusetts - paint in the Spring

I would put a good quality hard paint on 1st and then put ablative of a different color over it.

Do you moor or trailer? There are some ablatives made for trailerables that are fine for extended periods on the hard. I think they would be less effective than if they were stored wet. Look for "multi-season" paint. There are a few of those that boast two or three years of service.

That is what we used, Sea Hawks Cukote Biocide Plus Self-Polishing Bottom Paint in black, for 2 coats then 1 coat of dark Blue. When the blue wears through we will re-touch it.

It is a pretty hard ablative that will come off on your hand, but not as soft as what some use. I didn't see any evidence of it rubbing through after almost 5,000 miles on the trailer bunks.

Using the above I would make all the coats the same type paint.

We put it over Sea Hawk's Tuff Stuff barrier coat and are using the same combination on the Endeavour as it spends a lot of the year up on stands. We will go with one coat of black, plus another coat near the waterline and then a coat of Blue with more near the waterline.

Sea Hawk said to use a scotch brite on it before the boat goes back in the water if it has been out quite a while.

bottom painting continued

I have been using Donovan Marine Ablative B for the last 6 seasons Its highly rated by the practical sailor. Im satisfied with it and see no reason to change/ I will wait until spring

Do you drop the keel for every bottom job? If not, you might want to consider a hard paint inside the trunk and on the keel. Otherwise you'll be unprotected after the ablative wears off these areas.

Darn, I confused myself again!
Think I mixed your post up with a sailor that had dropped, cleaned and epoxied his Catalina 22 keel. That's my excuse anyway:D.
