I'm in the process of stipping off the old bottom paint and re-appling new bottom paint. In the past how do people remove the old bottom paint on the keel and the area inside the trunk and repaint it in the boat?
...about the "two inch space," buy you won't need five foot jackstands - the keel doesn't have to be completely dropped to get at it, just mostly dropped. What you are talking about doing will probably be tedious but it is doable.
Please be very careful to get the boat secured on the stands. Also, the bottom paint and sanding dust is very toxic. You don't want to breath the fumes or dust or even get it on your skin very much. This is one job I prefer to give to the boat yard. They have the equipment and experience to the job safely. the only paint i have left is inside the trunk and the parts of the centerboard that are inside the trunk. Once i get all the old paint off, I'm going to re-apply a barrier coat to the hull. The old barrier coat is in bad bad shape.
Do you need to repaint the hull each year if you keep the the boat moored in salt water for the summer/early fall season? I have had mine in the water 2 seasons and prepped and painted it both times.
