What a difference a year makes. For the last two years we have had to repaint the bottom due to the paint falling off, mostly in the same area. We just pulled Java on Nov 24 and after a hose down we found a beautiful bottom. WE WON'T HAVE TO PAINT AGAIN THIS SPRING *5 ;D I'm already in withdrawal, I've been having nightmares every night with something wrong with Java, It's floating away, it sprung a leak, its on fire, someone broke into it. On and On.... I won't last the winter.... BTW. Last spring we painted the bottom with West Marine CPP and if memory serves me it was around $90 or less after the rebate. Jim S/V Java

CPP

Jim, I've had CPP on for 2 seasons now and I was sure I'd have to recoat next spring. After haulout I inspected the bottom and she' good to go next spring. Of course, I'm in cold fresh water up here in MI, but I think CPP is a good product, and cheaper than Micron CSC.

CPP

Jim: I, too, have been using WM CPP for a couple of years. I really like it and will continue to use it (unless they change the formulation and price, like Interlux did with ACT, my previous paint of choice). I've found that if your boat comes out now and the bottom still looks good, all I need do in spring is power wash it a day or two before launch to get rid of any oxidized paint, dirt, or crud from winter storage. I sometimes go over it with a Scotch Brite pad, too. I also found that putting on a bit more CPP on the leading edges of the keel and rudder, down the bow, and around the waterline, where most wear occurs, really helps too. I'm already thinking spring....

CPP

Your getting more out the paint than its true application. West Marine CPP is really supposed to be a single season ablative. But if its working for you guys for multiple years, great! Rob Hessenius

I have used either CPP or PCA and I find.....

that the performance in the second year is terrible. The first year is fine. Consequently I apply a new coat each spring. A VERY THIN coat. I use exactly one gallon for my h40.5 with a 3/16" nap roller.

Down here I use CPP, too, but the water is saltier and the fouling more aggressive. Still, the paint lasts through the winter if the boat isn't pulled in the fall. For the new season, I only paint on one fresh coat, as opposed to two or even three with the hard antifoulings. However, I've also gone two seasons on hard paint without too much growth (and a scrub midway through both seasons).

Another Ablative

Has anyone ever tried the Super Ship Bottom ablative paints. I am in the New Orleans area, and have contacted the Super Ship Bottom customer support. Their plant is in Fla. and they told me that their paint would last three years in my area, by applying two coats. I have always used Trinidad, and get three years out of it, but the build up and eventual stripping can be a pain in the _ _ _. I would like to hear from anyone who has used this paint and what your results were with it.

I don't have any bottom paint.

This is another good reason to have a trailable boat.

"No Sanding" chemical

Jim, I know the simple joy you are now feeling. When my boat was new I pulled it out after just 2 months in the water and found large 1' strips of missing bottom paint. I took it back to the dealer and had it redone. This occurred for the next two seasons as well. The dealer was puzzled. It was very obvious that there was a product failure as it was always occurring in the same places on the hull. Bottom paint stayed on normally in most places but refused to stick in these bad spots. The dealer retired. The new owners told me that the old owners started using a new 'no sanding' chemical pretreatment and had very mixed results. I had the new dealer strip the bottom back down and start over with proven products and techniques. Now the bottom paint stays on and the marine life washes off.

Solution to Withdrawls

Jim: The club that I race with is doing Frostbite races for a couple more weeks. The skippers are clamoring for crew even though this is non-spinaker. Let me know if you are interested in getting a ride. Note: We'll make you work. Markdb Crew Jubilee Beneteau 36.7
